"We are saddened by the news today that our Compadre, Dusty Hill, has passed away in his sleep at home in Houston, TX. We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the ‘Top'. We will forever be connected to that "Blues Shuffle in C.”

You will be missed greatly, amigo.

My favorite story from the recent documentary on the band is that during a hiatus in the late 70's, he took a job at an airport. After becoming a hot live act, albums on the charts, he takes a day job.

Another favorite story about Dusty:

Hill acquired his bullet wound on Dec. 16, 1984, in an embarrassing mishap that started when his girlfriend went to pull off his boot and his derringer dropped out, discharging in the fall and hitting him in the abdomen.
...

"My first reaction was: ‘Shit!’ And then ‘Ouch.’ I couldn’t believe I’d done something so stupid. To this day, I don’t know how I could do it," he shrugged. "But I didn’t really feel anything at the time. All I knew was that I had to get myself to a hospital straight away, so I got in the car and drove there. It was only when I arrived at the hospital that the seriousness of what I’d done hit me, and I went into shock."

Great actor and sometime director (I've only managed to see one of his improvisational films with subtitles unfortunately, but it was bizarre and fantastic, would love to see more). Usually cast as a thug or villain, but occasionally more sympathetic parts, i.e the teacher in Truffaut's L'Argent De Poche.

Oh man. Too bad. Their early music was terrific (Tres Hombres is my favorite) and while the later albums were not as good they were definitely perfect for the times. They really adapted well to the MTV era. He'll be missed... I did see them in the late eighties and they were a lot of fun

There are a couple of stories like that about Philip Glass, involving the art critic Robert Hughes recognising him as he installed a dishwasher ("But you're an artist! I'm not going to allow you to install a dishwasher!") and a woman who, upon spotting his name in the New York cab that he was driving, said "Young man, do you realise you have the same name as a very famous composer?"

I get the distinct impression that Glass made next to nothing from his music throughout the Seventies, and that Einstein on the Beach, for all the fact that it played at the Met, left him out of pocket.

Almost every musician who's not selling out arenas has a day job, some more elegant than others

It's kind of stunning that three of the key leads are now gone, not to mention so many others who passed through as single year leads. (Post reunited with Harry Anderson and Charlie Robinson on 30 Rock - Anderson died years ago and Robinson died earlier this year too.) The show doesn't feel that old.

Night Court was blessed with a great cast, from its stars to its oddball assortment of guest stars. I remember being delighted to see her in There’s Something About Mary. Gone too soon, RIP.

Absolutely. I love how she casually sprays burning antiseptic on Stiller's privates in a futile attempt to help.
