I'm pretty sure there's no rule against a doc getting a BP nom. Every now and again it's speculated that it might happen - wasn't there some buzz for Man on Wire some years back?

Correct, docs are eligible. Siskel & Ebert apparently pushed heavily for Hoop Dreams to get a Best Picture nom because not only did it top both of their year's best lists, they actually predicted it would get snubbed in the best documentary category, knowing how fucked up (i.e. corrupt) the documentary nomination process had been.

"Nothing says Oscars like Halle Berry" is a sentence I never expected to hear.

It happened last year too - Honeyland was nominated for both International Film and Documentary.

If Viola or Chadwick don't win, no film will win more than two Oscars tonight, so twbb's "spread the love" prediction seems to have been solid

Nomadland could still end with more. Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Editing haven't been announced yet.
And Mank could still win Original Score.

Forgot about Actress. But Nomadland has one so far, so if it gets Picture, that's two. Not counting on an Editing win

With Sound of Metal winning editing, it still has Best Actor [possible] and Best Picture [unlikely]. Could end up with 3.

The only disappointing awards this far seem to be the documentary and best animation award. Does it have to be Pixar every time they are in the running?

I’m on board with that Tyler Perry speech too. “Meet me in the middle” is a controversial message these days, in that specific context.

I liked it too. Can Tyler Perry brand himself an Oscar-winner now? Or is that too disingenuous since it's the Humanitarian award

The problem with the Animated Feature starts with the nomination process. They simply don't consider independent and non-American productions. They want to perpetuate the idea that animation is a genre, not an artistic medium, and it's farcical.

I liked how when Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won you could see them standing up in the windows for both Soul and Mank.

A friend and I have been texting back and forth and he suggested Tyler Perry as a centrist Democratic politician — which I could sort of see.

More likely a deeply liberal politician with centrist framing.

Me too, just wondering if there's a precedent. I'd personally love to see it.

Exactly, I've started wondering if something has gone wrong backstage and they're stalling.

Like, almost all the awards are done...where's In Memoriam?
