Hopefully with Visions of Eight we’ll be closer to a stand-alone release of Olympia...I hope.

Is PARIAH the first film licensed from Focus Features or was MONSOON WEDDING the first? Looking over the list of titles they hold the rights to, I don't see anything that would necessarily be of interest for Criterion (I would've said maybe LUST, CAUTION or ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE MIND but those are Kinos) so I'm assuming this is a one-off.

Unless we are finally getting a Bluray of 8 WOMEN with English subtitles (am hoping !

There are Fox titles in the Sturges series on the channel. I maintain my belief that Criterion are as ever the special exception the studios will choose to keep working with.

Focus is just part of the Universal library so it’s always been on the table as we’ve seen Kino and Arrow begin to pull recently. I would actually not be surprised if Kajillionaire is forthcoming as it seems like something Criterion would take that was passed over for a Blu release despite Focus otherwise not being very stingy about that usually. I have said elsewhere I imagine one of the labels probably has a new restoration of Brokeback Mountain just because it’s such an important film that has an absolutely terrible Blu and it’s definitely one of the first things you’d think to grab from their titles.

The recent UK releases of Fox titles makes me think you are right, as I can't see them waiting that long to release Kagemusha over there and I also assume that they would have wanted to release Grand Budapest Hotel UK Blu-ray closer to the US release.

Looking at the official page for Pickup on South Street, it looks like the DVD is not going to be upgraded at all because it still retains the old features and restoration and doesn't have the new interview. Have they been doing this for a while and I missed it?

Yes, I think Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic all have new transfers on Blu, but didn't get new DVDs, so it has been going on for a while.

The Human Condition looks to be the same way, with the DVD now being more expensive than the Blu.

Häxan and Naked were another two that did not get a new DVD version when the BD came out. Pretty sure there are others.

I don't know what the rights situation is, but isn't Terms of Endearment much more in Criterion's alley?

I actually like Terms of Endearment a lot — and with Polly Platt’s heavy involvement it’s definitely in the current zeitgeist — but please god let it somehow be for Real Life.

Brooks was a producer on The Edge of Seventeen a few years ago, which is a film I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see end up on Criterion at some point. The Universal release was pretty lacklustre.

I was going by As Good as it Gets being a Sony film that is no longer available through Twilight Time. Terms of Endearment, which I would've mentioned, is a Paramount film, so not sure what the status is for Criterion

I understand Terrence Malick is a big fan of that one.

I would love to see this happen. It would fit with Criterion's recent effort to present more female filmmakers, and Fremon Craig is certainly a contemporary talent to watch. She and Brooks seem to have a strong working relationship, so I'm sure he'd be involved if that's the case. As mentioned, we could certainly ask for more than Universal's paltry <10 minutes of outtakes and deleted scenes.

A good HD version of the non-musical theatrical cut is available for purchase. I'm tempted to "upgrade" the circulating musical version just as I did with Demme's cut of Swing Shift, but I don't have the time right now.

I haven’t seen the original cut but I cannot imagine it retains the same feral energy, which is what makes the musical cut so damn engaging. It’s one of the most interesting failures I’ve seen, and I adore it for that. Played straight.. I’ll pass

It doesn't, but 60 or 75% of the picture footage would be upgraded. I don't mind the jarring changes in quality, it gives me eyes a break to see a clear, crisp picture for a good stretch rather than two straight hours of nth generation VHS dubs.
