Bafta Nominations.

After last year's issues (to put it mildly) it's good to see several female directors up for best director, and a range of nominees unlikely to be repeated at the Oscars (Rocks, Another Round)

How do they nominate Promising Young Woman everywhere but Best Actress and Best Director?

The screenplay is the more glaring strength so I could understand a director snub, but for best actress there's just no excuse, especially when there's an extra slot!

Alright, Rudy Giuliani's noms are pretty funny, and the Glenn Close/Ron Howard noms for Hillbilly Elegy are great, considering the former is a shoe-in for at least an Oscar nom

If Close gets an Oscar nomination, would that make her the first person to get an acting nomination in both for the same role? I'm not interested enough to actually go through all the historical nominations, but I'm sure someone has.

On the BAFTAs, the absence of Carey Mulligan has been noted elsewhere - from the few reports I've read, the nomination in the category that seems to have got the most (positive) notice is that of Alfre Woodard. But there was definitely an attempt to make the BAFTAs both more British and more diverse as in recent years they're seen to have become too similar to the Oscars. I remember well the oddball 80s - Sean Connery winning Best Actor for The Name of Rose, Denholm Elliott winning three Supporting Actor awards in a row, and Purple Rose of Cairo winning Best Film. Good times...

Ah, from schlock machine Diane Warren. It wasn't for this song, but Adam Schlesinger had a funny story about her in an A.V. Club interview:

“I was up against Andrew Lloyd Webber and Diane Warren. You know, all my peers, basically,” Schlesinger said in that 2001 interview of losing the 1997 Oscar to Lloyd Webber for Evita’s “You Must Love Me.” “It was funny, because Diane Warren was sitting right in front of me, and she writes these really sappy love ballads, but her personality does not fit her music. When he won, she was like, ‘That piece of shit won?’”

I've finally seen some nominated movies, albeit through the Cinema Snob videos! Here's the videos on Corona Zombies (aka the one that is 50% footage of Bruno Mattei's Hell of the Living Dead, for some reason) and here's Corona Zombies 2: Barbie & Kendra Save The Tiger King. Although it looks as if even the Cinema Snob balked at doing Barbie & Kendra Storm Area 51!

And kudos to the Razzies for noting the creepy forced relationship drama film 365 Days, which also got a Cinema Snob video. I wonder if Kenneth Branagh based his character in Tenet off of it!

I think I ran into three or four people in the business in the year prior to the pandemic who absolutely loved Diane Warren. One of them even approached her to write a song for their film as a favor. A FAVOR, which brings to mind a number of revolting analogies that won't be repeated here.

They really liked Dupontel this year— it’s the first time in eight years the Best Director and Best Film award went to the same movie, and he also won screenplay (and Dupontel regular Marie won Best Supporting Actor). And apparently he wasn’t even there because he doesn’t like awards!

You may mock, but I'm sure the cast of Calendar Girls are game for reforming and joining the protest at this year's BAFTAs!

Maybe it was less a protest about fur and more about how bad that Cats film was, and what should be done to the characters? It was what I imagine the attendees at a furry convention look like behind the scenes.

It was live and yes, it went unfiltered. Remember French are OK with nudity (in the US, this would have went NC-17, I guess).

Masiero is known for this kind of excess. She's extremely blunt and frank, so when she came on stage stating her costume might be too trash already, it was clear she was about to do even more.
This was a protest against the movie theaters (and cultural places overall) being closed since Oct 30th. She had "No culture, no future" written on her bust, and "Rends l'art, Jean" on her back (it's a pun : Jean Castex is our prime minister, and it sounds like Rends l'argent ie Give us back the money (while it means her Give us back the art), a phrase that has been recently used when one of our former Prime Minister got inculped for embezzlement).

"I wanted to get Deneuve's costume for Peau d'ane, the Sunshine one, but I got told it was too expensive and not essential enough. Deneuve in Peau d'ane, not essential enough ? Look what happened with Janet Jackson - it was barely nudity and it actually damaged her career (sales dropped and never recovered, not to mention the bans and the apology tour).

Just saw this - exactly! And it was more like her breast - her nipple wasn't exactly exposed, it had a foil star pasted on it. I have friends who probably expose as much when they breastfeed but of course that's controversial here too.

Tenia, can you shed some light on the Dupontel film’s situation? My understanding is that it only played for one week before the govt shut theatres down— has it been streaming on VOD or anything in France?
