This article, Pathanwadi in suburban Mumbai — the place where films go to die, contains these sobering stats:

About 1,700 silent films were made in India of which the National Film Archive of India has only 5 to 6 complete films and about 20-25 films in fragments. The film industry in Madras made 124 films and 38 documentaries in the silent era. Only one film survives. By 1950, India had lost 70-80 per cent of its films.

I saw that lost ending at its first public screening since it played for preview audiences. This was in 2012, so I’m surprised its taken this long to appear on home video. It was his estate that found it and wanted to play it.

The ending of Larry Semon's feature film Stop, Look and Listen (1926) was found in Tokyo (where barely any silent film survive at all, that's impressive!)

The Chicago Film Archives posted this on twitter - CFA is excited to announce that a complete 35mm print of lost silent feature film The First Degree (1923) has been rediscovered in our collection. Directed by Edward Sedgwick and produced by Universal, The First Degree is a rural melodrama starring Frank Mayo. More info soon!

There's a "Laurel OR Hardy" DVD by Lobster Films in France which include this film, and there's been a hint that it may become a US Blu-ray release at some point.

As for The First Kiss reel, I'll wait until we know exactly what's inside !

Note: YT upload features heavy image flutter. Upload seems to show a print being projected. A YT comment mentions an out-of-sync projector shutter.

Update -- relevant quote from the Nitrateville thread:
"the video I have uploaded was done by projecting the nitrate using my 1906 cinematograph onto a screen and positioning a camera to capture it, so apologies for the loss of quality. Similarly, there is a bit of shutter ghosting on some sections, which is due to the shutter on my projector. The jumpiness is also due to the nature of my machine's mechanism. To be clear, the film print itself is in near perfect condition, and any quality issues are on my end."

Wouldn’t be surprised if the shutter were the issue — it’s hard to line up camera and projector shutters even at the best of times, unless you’re using a five-bladed telecine projector.

Still, a very exciting find! And nice to see Bill Morrison in the comments giving a little advice.
