I don't see anything mentioning these as new restorations, but assuming the website stills are accurate representations of the restorations and what will eventually be on disc, they don't appear to be the same masters as the German BDs:

Looks like there was a French release from Wild Side last year that also included the 1938 versions.

The br.com news post just says BD info will come later, not whether they'll be separate releases... but I certainly hope they won't be. They're separate admissions at the Film Forum screening, if that's indicative of anything...

And I swear br.com didn't say they were 4k restorations at first. But it was late—maybe I just missed it. Definitely didn't see it mentioned anywhere on the FM site's pages for them...

Beaver on the Indian Epic

In the review, Gary asserts, but then questions, whether the Kalat commentaries are repeated:

The Film Movement Blu-ray offer the same (I think they are the same, although don't recall hearing some information regarding brown-face make-up and tigers in the wild) audio commentaries, for both Der Tiger von Eschnapur and Das indische Grabmal, by film scholar David Kalat and the 20-minute German documentary on the making of the Lang's Indian Epic.

Are the commentaries ported over from the Eureka MoC discs, or are they new? I loved the MoC commentaries, but it's not unheard of for Kalat to revisit his tracks. For example, Kalat recorded new versions of his commentaries for the MoC Mabuse Der Spieler (compared to Image release) and Testament (compared to Criterion). I'm wondering if (aside from the beautiful image upgrade) the only new extra feature is the Debra Paget, For Example video essay by Rappaport.

I'll be very happy if the Zulawski makes it onto Blu-Ray.

For some reason, Film Movement has felt compelled to use a pull quote for L'important c'est d'aimer that pushes a version of Romy Schneider's death no longer believed to be accurate (ie she died of a heart attack, not an overdose)

And damn, if she doesn't carry it all off with searing courage and commitment, plus an uncanny warm, womanly humor which makes this performance the true crown of her career, cut short by her tragic suicide in 1982. - David Noh, Film Journal International

Film Movement has announced a theatrical reissue (and eventual video release) of Yimou's Shanghai Triad (1995). Hopefully that means other of his earlier films are coming soon as well, in particular Raise the Red Lantern (1991).

Unfortunately I wouldn't bank on it. This is part of Film Movement's ongoing relationship with Studio Canal and AFAICT Canal doesn't have any other Zhang films. (They inherited this one from UGC, the main international co-producer.)

The Hong Kong Blu-ray of this (which had Canal branding) didn't look so hot, but it's also about ten years old, so maybe there's been a remastering since.

The HK blu ray looks pretty good if you drop the gamma two clicks. But if this is from a more recent remaster, will definitely pick it up.
