If true, that would almost certainly be Roma (2018), and the "big announcement" aside from Spine # may be some combination of confirming a larger Netflix deal, the release being their first 4K UHD title, or both.

This has almost outdone all the NBA free agency hype and speculation, if only someone would now anonymously comment on Mulvaney's summer travel plans and how they connect to spine 1000.

Kind of thrown off by the sudden bitter turn of this thread. I was hoping for Grand Budapest and some trailer tribute love fest to Wes; I haven't been much of a Godzilla fan since the Madison Square Garden letdown of my childhood, but still...but still...

I realize that a lot of people probably wouldn't be too happy about a Godzilla set, but I think it's important to note that most of the Showa-era films have been only available on expensive, out of print, and pretty bad DVDs for a while. Godzilla fans are wild, I feel like a set will sell hard.

Considering the difficulties he faced with Toho re: his Godzilla commentaries and his career as a forensic technologist, I guess it would be too much to ask that David Kalat would appear on many of these disks. He's one of those speakers who makes you think more clearly after listening to him.

No kidding. If these excellent commentaries don’t port over, mega fans will likely want to hold onto at least the Classic Media releases of their Shōwa films and the two Tokyo Shock first printings if you have them for their excellent supplements, and exhaustive versions and dubs (most of these films have more than one English dub made around the time of release including the hilariously awful AIP dubs).

Also, I know we’re just spitballing around baseless hearsay here but if Criterion did get some kind of Netflix deal, that could open them up to releasing the most recent trilogy of Japanese Godzilla films (an anime trilogy released post-Shin) which are exclusively distributed by Netflix in North America and so far without physical releases.

I doubt Criterion has a deal with Netflix the way they have deals with WB, Paramount, etc. and Cuarón just had it put into the contract that a physical release of Roma could happen after a certain window of Netflix exclusivity (we've heard from the Other Side of the Wind team that they have this kind of arrangement). I think the chances of Netflix opening up their back catalog to Criterion or any other DVD/Blu distributor are slim to nil and it'll just be limited to cases where the filmmakers have enough pull to negotiate an exception.
