The clip they showed for Yalitza Aparicio was embarrassing, it's like it was chosen by someone clearly upset by her nomination. Does anyone really watch that and think "great acting"?

Olivia Colman’s was bad too, one of her earliest and most airheaded scenes that really downplays her character/performance. All the clips were bad, from the opening montage through In Memorium.

I knew this was going to be a shitshow so I leaned into my other brand and just watched French movies instead. Reading the winners afterwards provided me with about twenty seconds of disappointment versus 3+ hours, so I’m feeling okay about that decision

Roma has been of interest to me since it was announced and I still haven't watched it. On the flipside I hear how terrible Green Book is and so now it looks like I'm taking the bait and finally giving these two a watch later this week because of the Oscars.

Technically not the worst film nominated but still such a cringeworthy choice for Best Picture, especially in 2018/19. And it got Best Screenplay too!

It could have gone so, so much worse, though. Don't get me wrong, I don't like Green Book one bit, but at least it's a safe and middle-of-the-road choice, and at least it has that magical quality about it where people will forget about it in a year, along the lines of The King's Speech. A Bohemian Rhapsody or (especially) a Black Panther win would, on the other hand, signal a sea change in the way people think of and vote for Oscar contenders, and I'd much rather a whatever movie wins Picture for the millionth time than that.

My criteria for a successful Oscars is if there is at least one pleasant surprise. Olivia Colman and Spike Lee winning means this year wasn't all bad. And am I crazy for preferring a host-less Oscars? I'll admit I always start out with the lowest expectations, but I don't think it dragged as much. I missed the Queen opener, so that likely helped.

Have to feel a bit sorry for/amused at Spike Lee being validated and then having the awards immediately negated on him with the Driving Miss Daisy of the 2010s getting Best Picture within a matter of minutes though!

(By the way I love the commentary on this thread every year. I usually cannot watch the awards live so come here first without looking at any news sites and try to guess what won by the reaction comments!)

I did the same, which I always do. Haven't watched the Oscars in years. I watched My Dinner with Andre. I cracked open the bluray that I saved just for this night. Not sure why folks waste 3 hours plus to feel mostly disappointed afterwards.

Good thing being in France : not watching the Oscars since it's 2AM in here when it starts, so I never ever watched it live.
Good for me this year, though they could have given Best FX to Black Panther but instead went for a deserving movie for this one.
I'm not that surprised by the Green Book awards, as explained by others before, it seems like the safest middle of the road movie for the old white folks at the Academy, but I'm baffled by Bohemian getting Best editing, considering how awful it is edited.

I felt that the lack of a host really impacted it -- gone were the unfunny time-wasting monologues and photo-bomb stunts (firing hot dogs at a multiplex audience, pizza deliveries, that kind of crap). They got right down to business and stayed that way. The real drag was the interminable acceptance speeches, with the Hair & Makeup winners being a real low point. The Academy should use their agonizing acceptance bit as an example to all future nominees -- "please don't do this."

Colman's speech made the whole show worth it. I've never seen someone so delighted and surprised (and I also laughed more during her speech than the rest of the show). Also Lee winning (and jumping on Jackson) was great, and I liked Cuarón's speeches as well.

Otherwise, what a shit show, and not in an enjoyable way.
