Location seems a thing. If you're living in LA, don't know where Wells lives, UT is a lot more confident than the rest.

Merely talking about the quality/cultural relevance of the films, I am certain Wells isn't flying to the middle of Utah if he can't write blog post on what movies he sees and people he schmoozes with.

I don't think it's fundamentally about him not being able to see and review the films or even report on whom he schmoozed with, judging from his entitled, martyr-complex, self-victimizing, grandstanding post about how unfair this is. After all, he admits that he may simply attend anyway. Lots of people don't get the press credentials they want or have received in the past, but this seems to be mainly about his overblown ego more than anything else. Case in point, he calls this an "instructive moment" for all of us, and a setback that is "fairly historic on some level."

The issue is that Sundance's reason isn't public. If it's because he's been critical of them, then it's a little censorshippy; if it's because he's an ass who's made very crass critical comments about female actresses (let alone the whole Vinessa Shaw thing), then I actually applaud them on their stand.
I don't have it in me to search the HE site for the post(s?) discussed in this Twitter thread:

Here's a screenshot of the relevant section. He's written/bragged in the past of how shitty he is to festival volunteers:

Oh yeah, the TIFF incident. As someone with a few friends who’ve been TIFF volunteers over the years ... fuck Wells.

Wells lives in L.A. -- Amazingly, he has in the past posted his residential address on his site! Even without that, a search of his name takes about three minutes to find his address... and realtor pictures of the inside of his apartment... and all sorts of interesting info (nothing about his relation to Mary & Joseph, though). You'd think someone in the public eye would be a little more savvy about releasing that info. But then this is a guy who trumpets his Eastern-Bloc neck-twaddle-reduction surgery every chance he gets and rides a scooter with a literal fox tail attached to it like some kind of flapper boyfriend. Weird dude.

Check the dude in the comments trolling Wells with his "Color version of Schindler's List."

Always fascinating to see how the very simple answer (color photo of a B&W image) gets totally overlooked and it ends up like this instead.

The Lonely Island could do a new version of their song that'd be No Offense.

There must have been some women sitting near him in the theater that were laughing too loud.

I can’t tell if him calling out something for being crude in the same sentence as using the term “sucks donkey balls” is a self-aware joke or just classic Wells

We may never know for sure! But lack of self-awareness is basically Wells’s stock in trade.

Michael, I believe he’s in his 70s.

Tom Scharpling and Jeffrey Wells had a bizarre & hilarious exchange on Twitter over Uncut Gems, in which Scharpling essentially goads Wells into making fun of himself:
Jeffrey Wells wrote:“Creepy” connotes dark, hidden, slithery innards. I am the opposite of that, “son.” I am an open book. Every day I stand naked in the wind. Let the sunshine in. Into the mystic. Thou art an easy lay when it comes to the hyper, super-frenzied Safdies.

He’s really got it out for UG. It provoked this earlier in the month:

“In other words not one person so far feels as I do. And I’m telling you the truth, mon freres. Which is why you can’t trust “critics”, per se. Because they’re all living in their own little fickle cubbyholes while Hollywood Elsewhere is standing tall and firm with its feet planted on the sidewalk and looking dead smack at cosmic reality each and every minute of every day…no let-up.”

These days I just like thinking of Jeffrey Wells as the Neil Breen of film criticism.

Is that his license number in the highlighted box?
"Someone please steal my identity! ... Anyone?"

And he liked Knives Out but still had to yell at Rian Johnson about "HIPSTER PANTS":
“Incidentally, I HATED the cut of her pants cuffs, riding three or four inches above the sneaker line. Only hipster assholes wear pants that are cut like that. Are you telling me that Ana’s character, a Paraguayan woman who lives on a modest salary with her family in a grubby, smallish apartment, is going to wear HIGH-CUFF HIPSTER PANTS? I don’t think so!”

Johnson reply: “So happy you dug it, man. Though there goes our shot at a BEST PANTS nom.”
