Anyone else noticed that the pillarboxing on the Blu-ray of this film isn't as black as it could be? It seems to be a dark grey, which I only noticed on a 16:10 screen with two different shades of black surrounding the picture. Pretty sure this isn't a RGB/YUV issue with my PC either as no other title is having this problem.

I just watched the documentary on the KINO BD of the restoration of the new/final cut of Metropolis. My question is, why would the Soviet censors be against this film in 1929 when it was out for distribution? Why did they not allow it into the USSR?

Because its ideological befuddlement was especially offensive to the Soviets, I assume, what with the easily-manipulable workers beholden to the good graces of the ruling elite for their dubious go-back-to-work 'liberation'. I actually think the film is idiotic enough to be ideologically offensive to just about everybody, which is quite an achievement!

As zedz says, it's not a revolutionary film. Class isn't overthrown, it's maintained, just with both sides becoming a little more appreciative of each other. For a movie of its lofty reputation, it is shockingly vacuous. I don't get the sense that Lang was much interested in ideas, leaving that part to his pseudo-intellectual wife.

I'm sure the recurrent religious imagery and symbolism didn't help its chances with the soviets, either.

Fritz Lang’s masterpiece, METROPOLIS will be re-released in Jan in new SteelBook packaging and incl. a 2nd Blu-ray with additional features
The set will now feature the Giorgio Moroder version and a 45-min documentary exploring the film’s rediscovery alongside the previous BD

Not the most exciting (re-re-)release, perhaps, but considering that I've been contemplating importing the Moroder version BD and the German BD set for the other extras for a while, I'm certain to upgrade.

The Steelbook looks incredible too.

Wouldn't just a free copy of some movie suffice? I guess all the stock will be sold out thanks to compulsive gamblers now. How does such a promotion even come about? Someone in the office stumble across a gold bar and decide it was perfect for selling a rehash of Metropolis?

So that's an extra £2 worth of costs per Steelbook...

Personally, I'd prefer not to have to buy Blu-ray & Scratchcard boxsets in the future.

So, bearing in mind that the new Special Edition Steelbook is limited to 4,000 units worldwide, how did I just receive a copy bearing the number 4,131?

I assume this is some quirk of mass production rather than a grand conspiracy but it still feels a little odd. Assuming additional units were pressed for promotional purposes etc., they normally aren't issued with numbers. Although I suppose since it's engraved on the back of the Steelbook, maybe that wasn't an option this time around?

Eureka put up a low stock alert on Facebook a few hours ago. They said they expect them to be sold out within a few weeks. All 4,131 of them, I guess.

Was anyone unfortunate enough to buy Eureka's 1999 DVD of Metropolis? I very nearly bought their mid-90s VHS, but ended up going for Hunchback of Notre Dame instead, which was lucky, as I chanced upon the Moroder tape in a clothes shop a month or two later! Anyway, we saw the DVD in art class in 2001, and it was awful. Heavily edited, more so then the usual 16mm prints, very dull music, and playing in super slow motion! I eventually volunteered to bring in the Moroder version, I couldn't stans no more!

The Moroder version really was the best way to see Metropolis for a surprisingly long time!

I'm so glad I did. Metropolis does not lend itself well to contrasty 16mm mega crops - Nosferatu on the other hand almost gains from it!

Joke aside, the inclusion of the 2001 version makes the package interesting, but I already have the 2 previous steelbooks. Hum...

EDIT : scratch that, the 2001 cut is DVD-only.

I happen not to have nabbed the earlier release(s) so will be probably getting this but I'm really just thrilled to see Eureka dipping their toes in the hard box + book LE format Arrow's been using for bigger releases this year. Just hope that it happening to be on a title they've releasef several times before won't hurt the sales if this is to be a pilot release of some kind.
