Just got the Chabrol set in and it has unadvertised bonuses: commentaries on L'Enfer and Rien ne va plus from Wade Major and Andy Klein (who did the great Lavardin coms) and a 40-minute Kent Jones interview with Francois Cluzet

Since they said they were planning theatrical releases, it could be a while before any of the titles show up on home video.justeleblanc wrote:Any news on the forthcoming Rivette releases?

Apart from the aspect ratio, is everyone happy with Howards End?
Because I don't see a high quality encoding judging from the screenshots.
I hope Maurice isn't that way.

Good point. I just didn't know if all of those titles would be getting theatrical re-releases. I would think only the more popular films would, but I didn't know if there had been any news on that front.jsteffe wrote:Since they said they were planning theatrical releases, it could be a while before any of the titles show up on home video.justeleblanc wrote:Any news on the forthcoming Rivette releases?

Re: Cohen Film Collection
I think it's a fair bet that after a few have built up these Merchant Ivory titles will be licensed to one of the UK labels (Cohen bought the library outright worldwide), probably in Box Set form, who usually have a better history of encoding. I'd expect similar from the Rivettes once they begin coming out.Costa wrote:Apart from the aspect ratio, is everyone happy with Howards End?

What don't you like about it? Dreadful noise from Criterion appears gone, and assuming the elements are in great shape, a 4k scan is not going to have pervasive and significant grain. Looks great to me.Costa wrote:Apart from the aspect ratio, is everyone happy with Howards End?

Re: Cohen Film Collection
Cohen was suppose to release The Salesman. It has gone up for preorder by Sony. Could this have to do with an Oscar win?

Re: Cohen Film Collection
Amazon Studios actually bought the U.S. rights for The Salesman and teamed up with Cohen for the theatrical release. I don't think Cohen was ever supposed to release it on video—this article from last year specifies that Cohen "is the US theatrical partner." Amazon titles have come out on physical media through a few different outfits, but Sony handles most of them. A similar thing happened with The Handmaiden, which Amazon handed off to Magnolia for theatrical distribution and to Sony for DVD/Blu. At least this time Sony announced a BD up front.

Re: Cohen Film Collection
All recent Cohen releases are showing up as being released Sony. Looks like they just distribute them.

Re: Cohen Film Collection
Amazon.com lists a few Cohen titles as Sony releases, but I'm pretty sure that's not what's going on here. Sony put out their own press release for The Salesman that makes no mention of Cohen and includes cover art that is clearly not for a Cohen release.

Re: Cohen Film Collection
I edited one of the extras for Cohen.
Not that that means that Sony couldn't have taken the project over in more recent weeks (I signed off on my contribution in January and have had no involvement since), but Cohen were 100% definitely involved with the Blu-ray at some stage.

Re: Cohen Film Collection
Might be a case like Hitchcock/Truffaut, where Cohen is mentioned on the back of the packaging and on the disc itself, but which was released through Universal with Universal-style packaging (e.g. the "HD PICTURE AND THEATER QUALITY SOUND" banner on the back). Cohen could've put the disc together themselves and handed it off to Universal, and maybe they're doing the same with Sony and The Salesman.

Sudden Fear is currently sold for $9.99 on amazon.com; Howard's End for $13.49. For Cohen BR's these are pretty good prices.

What a wonderful film The official story is!!! I've just watched an old print. In France has been restored and released but only on DVD + book with: Entretien avec le réalisateur Luis Puenzo
- Entretien en 4 parties avec le réalisateur (40 min) : « Un scénario sous haute tension », « Filmer l’histoire », « Les comédiens », « Négation et révélations » - Module sur la restauration + 1 livre de témoignages sur l’histoire du film
When is out in the States?
and behind a VERY strange name is this beauty that looks German Chunchuna Villafañe

Re: Cohen Film Collection
Just a quick question that, perhaps, someone here has an answer to.
I really wanted to pick up Arrow's new blu-ray of City of the Dead. I have a multi-region player, and this clearly is the best version of the film available.
But.
I would prefer to purchase a Region A version, if possible. Now I know VCI has their blur-ray, but it has been ripped by most as being inferior, even, to their own earlier DVD of the film (which I own, and am quite satisfied with for now).
Since Cohen shared the restoration with Arrow, does any think a Region A disc from them is possible? They are quite behind on their releases. Still no sign of THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE, and that's months and months late, so I'm not hopeful.

Re: Cohen Film Collection
Cohen has said on Facebook that both titles will be released in the U.S. at some point, but offered no idea of what sort of timeline we're looking at. They were especially vague about CITY OF THE DEAD; I think in that case they said it would come out here "eventually." So I share your frustration.jazzo wrote:Just a quick question that, perhaps, someone here has an answer to.

Re: Cohen Film Collection
BR.com's forums say Cohen confirmed that a UK label will be doing versions of Howard's End that fix some of the problems on that release - question becomes whether or not it's Arrow or MoC, right?
(If there were more than just the two ready restorations - Howard's End and Maurice - I'd totally bet on it being Arrow as an Academy box, but I could kind of just as easily imagine it just being two attached MoC releases)

Couldn't Cohen just do a proper release of the Brownlow documentary on Keaton, A HARD ACT TO FOLLOW?

Re: Cohen Film Collection
Does that even exist in HD form? As a mid-80s British TV documentary, the master may well be SD PAL.Roscoe wrote:Couldn't Cohen just do a proper release of the Brownlow documentary on Keaton, A HARD ACT TO FOLLOW?
