Got my Douglas Sirk double feature in the mail yesterday. I watched around half of Lured before falling asleep (not the movie's fault, I started it too late) but it looked great, hope they release more of Sirk's early output.

The trailer for Sudden Fear that played before looked fantastic, really looking forward to that release.

Buried in the article is the mention that Cohen has secured the rights to King of Hearts (1966) in all territories except France, although, inexplicably, the actual title of the film was excluded from the article.

Cohen Media GroupU.S. label Cohen Media has announced that it has acquired the distribution rights for ten films directed by Jacques Rivette. The label has also secured the rights to three early, recently discovered shorts.

The newly licensed films will be digitally restored by Celluloid Dreams. Theatrical screenings are also planned for 2017.

The label has also confirmed that it is working with Universal Studios on a brand new 4K restoration of James Whale's film The Old Dark House (1932), starring a very young Boris Karloff.

Another recent acquisition for the label is acclimated French helmer Philippe de Broca's film King of Hearts (1966), starring Alan Bates, Geneviève Bujold, and Pierre Brasseur.

NOTE: This year, Cohen Media has released on Blu-ray new restorations of Philippe de Broca's Five Day Lover (1961) and On Guard (1997), Maurice Pialat's Under the Sun of Satan (1987), Jean-Luc Godard's A Married Woman (1964), and Douglas Sirk's A Scandal in Paris (1946) and Lured (1947).

Upcoming Blu-ray releases include new 4K restoration of James Ivory's Howards End (1992) and 2K restoration of David Miller's Sudden Fear (1952).

But, I was kind of... let's say... fond of Emmanuelle Béart from her young days...

Several years ago I bought in Japan "La Belle Noiseuse" on blu-ray (First, my main concern was to check that it was the complete movie (not the "short" edit supervised by Rivette) then probably the main concern was to check if this was "foufoune" blurried (don't google-translate it's a bit dirty).
Well, that's how I discover what they call in Japan "Remastered Edition".
that means that the blu-ray was just an upscale (and 1080i with a lot of juggering)
There has been a half or quarter definition broadcast on French TV (digital) and it has more details.
It's almost blurry.
If I take my DVD (Arte) and upscale it, it looks as good- or even better...

Le "Pont Du Nord" by MoC/Eureka Blu-Ray on the other hand looks just fine.
Too bad they didn't get the rights for La Belle Noiseuse....

on the other hand Vincent Gallo "Buffalo '66" was stunning (better than the Blu-Ray US which came later; with more details, film grain, etc...) I didn't expect this blu-ray and movie looking THAT good in High-Def...

The thing with Japanese Blu-Ray is that you never know...

Well, the good news (for you) is that Cohen licenses to both MoC and Arrow so it's very likely if the Cohen release does end up disappointing for whatever reason it's very likely to be at least slightly improved upon in the UK.

Very excited about Jeanne la Pucelle on Blu. I saw the full version on 35mm in DC circa 2006, and at the time I thought it was Rivette's best looking film.

I wish Va Savoir+ would have also been included in the deal, but I'm guessing that (a) Sony still holds the rights, and that (b) the "+" cut is not real, but a unicorn.

I certainly remember reports that this longer version of Va savoir was, in fact, screening in French theaters at one point -- but it certainly never went any further.

Wow. Good job Cohen Media Group for picking up these Rivette films for release on Blu-ray. While you're at it, please release some Claude Sautet films, too. I'd like to see Les Choses de la Vie, Un Coeur en Hiver, and Nelly et Mr. Arnaud on Blu-ray.

Fun bit of trivia others might enjoy: the theatre Va savoir plus played in is the Cinéma du Panthéon, perhaps the oldest surviving cinema in Paris (albeit renovated extensively). According to this blog post, it's also where Godard shot the scene of Anna Karina watching Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc for Vivre sa vie. It was owned by Pierre Braunberger at the time, JLG's producer, and Godard, Truffaut and Rivette were all regular fixtures both as filmmakers presenting their work and as spectators for other films (you can read more about this in the excellent Cinemas of Paris anthology edited by Jean-Michel Frodon and Dina Iordanova).

The BFI BD was from a 4K transfer. I don't recall if there was a downscale at 2K in the restoration workflow though.
