I was kind of bored tonight and decided I wanted to center The Man Who Fell to Earth. I ended up playing with the clone brush and fading it a bit, but figured I'd throw it up here just for kicks. I don't like the text as much faded and it's also a little bit off center (could not get the alignment tool to work right at all) but oh well.

Image

Oh also, is there any hope of a Seventh Seal background without the pink lines behind the text? My copy definitely doesn't have pink lines and the larger image on amazon.com also does not have the pink lines.

edit.

I still use the Ran background. 8-)
Are you sure about the missing pink? Both the Criterion page and CriterionDVD has the pink outline...

I've added a few more wallpapers 1, 85, 171, 208, 220

I have it and my copy doesn't have any pink outlines; plus putting pink there doesn't really make any sense.

Why, after all the fuss about the Viridiana cover, would you make desktop art out of it?

It's very weird. The Seventh Seal has pink outline on both CC's page and CriterionDVD but my copy does not have it either (don't say you won't learn anything in the wallpaper thread). Does anyone have a copy with the pink outline? I decided to add another TSS wallpaper without the pink outline: http://www.criterion.frac.dk/wall

The pink shadow is actually magenta, used by the designer as a placeholder for the silver ink. Printers don't usually have silver as a standard ink color, so, if your design requires silver ink, you can develop your design with magenta instead (or any other printer color) knowing that by the time it's sent off to be printed silver ink will be loaded into the machines as a substitute for magenta ink.

As for cover art discrepancies between the Criterion website and your DVD shelves, there are plenty. Off the top of my head I recall that 3 Women, Band of Outsiders, Tokyo Olympiad, My Metier, and Day of Wrath all have small differences (mostly minor typographical layout issues, although Band of Outsiders is considerably different).

Wow - thanks! My wallpapers are a mix between high resolution scans and some I just grap from the criterion page and blow up. I prefer the scans, but sometimes I just get lazy like everyone else. TSS was taken from the criterion page and the one I added today is from a scan I did this morning and that comply with your explanation above. Again, thanks for the info!

Thank you very much, I'm using that as my background now and I love it.

Also, I know you do a few different things for your website, maybe one of your new project ideas could be archiving the postcards if they keep coming? That might be pretty cool.

Love, love love hammock's site - but I'd ditch the SPOOF section (where will it end? and it's nothing to do with Criterion really) -- and replace it with a CATALOGS section. My tuppence.

That makes sense - I will remove it and replace it with the excellent idea of tasog37 - a postcard section! I don't have all postcards myself and would be very happy if someone could help me out. Catalogs will be added once the postcard section is done - help would be needed here as well. Thanks for the positive critic as well - always appreciated!

Glad you liked the postcard idea; the only one I have is Masculin Feminine. I'll see if I can get my girlfriend to scan it for me and I'll send it your way. (If that's one of the ones you need)

to whoever was having trouble centering using photoshop...
find out where you want it, in this case, 512 pixels vertical.

view -> New Guide -> vertical: 512 pixels.

then just make sure "snap" is on, and voila, perfect center.

meisner, thanks for the kind words. I think I'm going to pull out my criterions and start doing wallpapers of famous shots and not just the cover art, with the title and criterion banner on them ofcourse.

EDIT:

here's the first...

I actually use fireworks; it has a button that says vertical center but I could not for the life of me get it to be clickable when I was playing with that.

I'm sure if I gave it enough effort I could do it, but thank you for the help. That advice should transfer over well.

Edit:

Also, does anybody have a transparent Criterion Collection top bar logo thing? That would be super helpful.

Edit again:

Here's a Shoot the Piano Player one I've been playing with. It's really, really simple. No Criterion logo because I decided no logo was better than a stretched out pixelated version:

Simple. Don't stretch the title, just cut and paste.

Yeah but then it's all small and hardly readable. I dont know, I'll play around with it in a little bit.

Here's a transparent, 1280 wide, black criterion banner.

it will work in fireworks and in photoshop, just make sure you save it first, then open it, then copy paste. if you copy paste from the browser, it may come out as a black box.

Yeah, I usually save my stuff as .png's so I know how they work.

But thanks a lot for that, I appreciate it.

Edit: (sorry this took so long, imageshack wasn't working for some reason)

Thanks to hammock for your great wallpapers... Particularly the ones for F for Fake, Mr. Arkadin, Ran, Braziland Notorious. Finally I can something nice for a wallpaper, as opposed to crappy movie stills I find on the web.

If I may, I'd like to make a request for a Throne of Blood; it's such a painterly cover design, and would make a lovely wallpaper.

Again, thanks for the hard work!

Thanks! I already done the Throne Of Blood wallpaper in a high resolution scan but won't be able to upload it until tonight. It took a little time but the result is rather amazing so you were right in your prediction.

tasog37: I only had the two postcards already uploaded so please supply the Masculin Feminine if possible my friend.

Is there a possibility for a Kill! wallpaper with higher resolution. I love the way Tatsuya Nakadai looks at my multitasking :D, but unf. it's all a bit hazy and/or pixelated

I have now uploaded this for you from a high resolution scan.
Just uploaded Throne Of Blood (190) as well and it became an instant favourite - check it out.

I already did a Seven Samurai but it is not a high res scan, so I will redo it for you. I will also take a look at Tokyo, but it's a tough one. In fact, all future wallpapers will be from high res scans only. I got the yellow fever and added 189 "The White Sheik" this morning - enjoy!
