If it's Wanda Gosciminska – Weaver, I plead insanity.
You ain't kiddin' me: there ain't no insanity clause!

No, because I know how to spell it, i.e. by copying and pasting from IMDb.

How could I have forgotten Wajda's 'The Promised Land'? ](*,)
One of the great 'discoveries' - along with 'Night Train' and his 'Innocent Sorcerers' - from the recent Polish film box-sets.

I see his 'Landscape After Battle' qualifies also, but it's just too grim to make the 50

Random observation for the day: A lot of the most prominent votes for certain very mainstream films are coming from lists that are otherwise almost impenetrably obscure. So while there are a lot of interesting newcomers to the top 100 at this point, the upper reaches are still composed largely of the usual suspects. Something to keep in mind when reviewing the final tally.

Submitted my list today. I doubt it fits the description of impenetrably obscure though there are a couple of prominent votes for heavy mainstream favorites (all spelled correctly, I'm pretty sure  ).

Breakdown: 22 of my picks made the forum top 100 last time, 4/5 of the spotlight picks I saw made my final 50 and 13 films re/watched specifically for this project made it. I'm guessing I will have around 16 also-rans and 7 orphans.

Narrow misses:
51. McCabe & Mrs Miller (Altman, 1971)
52. Klute (Pakula, 1971)
53. Shooting Range (Tarasov, 1979)
54. King of Marvin Gardens (Rafelson, 1972)
55. Five Easy Pieces (Rafelson, 1970)
56. Night Moves (Penn, 1975)
57. Heart of Glass (Herzog, 1976)
58. Gates of Heaven (Morris, 1978)
59. Brewster McCloud (Altman, 1970)
60. The Spider's Strategem (Bertolucci, 1970)

My #50
Spoiler
A sure-fire orphan: the only 70's film in my animated list write-up.

One actress is in three of my top fifty - one's a comedy, one's a musical, one's a horror.

Last minute reprieves for the following:

The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
The Ballad of Cable Hogue (1970)

and, of course, Wajda's 'The Promised Land'

Have just submitted my list. Here are some films that I would have liked to include, but (un)fortunately the 70s proved a richer era than I imagined before (and this learning effect is certainly the best part of this whole listmaking exercise):

Zabriskie Point (Antonioni 1970)
Picnic at Hanging Rock (Weir 1976)
Le fantome de la liberté (Bunuel 1974)
Korol Lir (Kozintsev 1971)
Confessions among actresses (Yoshida 1971)
L'hypothèse du tableau volé (Ruiz 1979)
A River Called Titas (Ghatak 1973)
Kalina Krasnaya (Shukshin 1973)

Well, these are all certainly highly recommended....

I'm with you on Confessions among actresses (Yoshida 1971), Tommo; it was on my original list but just missed out with the revision.
Korol Lir (Kozintsev 1971) was on my shortlist, although I prefer his 'Gamlet'

'Zabriskie Point' looks brilliant for the most part, but the climactic scene(s) jar too much.
'A River Called Titas' has been too long in my unwatched box - or boxes

Pointless hint for the day: There are currently two ties in the top 100 where the films tied are by the same director.

That was only the case before I noticed that I had neglected to combine all the votes for that version of Bottle Rocket that he made when he was 8.

Trying to put together a last-minute list, which will feature numerous experimental shorts that I saw some years ago and have hazily idealised.

One that can be found on Youtube is Patrick Bokanowski's La Femme qui se poudre, surely one of the most nightmarish films of the decade, unfurling in a confused landscape of ominous smudges and blurred masks. I've never really worked out - or bothered to investigate, admittedly - how he made his films: some kind of combination of costumed live action pantomime and painted animation.* (I see this popped up in both the Animation and Horror list discussions, fittingly.)

*Is there anyone else who has worked in anything approaching this style? If so, I'd like to know.

No one that I can think of though Lynch's early work comes close to capturing the same mood.

Just a few of the gems that I would like to have included - or perhaps not, because that would mean that those that made it wouldn't have enthralled me so much:

The Parallax View (1974)
Family Plot (1976)
Sisters
The Italian Connection
Confessions Among Actresses (1971)
La gueule ouverte (1974)
Professione: reporter (1975)
Remember My Name (1978)
Mirror (1975)
Wanda (1970)
Maîtresse (1976)
Il conformista (1970)
Strategia del ragno (1970)
Bill Douglas Trilogy (1972) (or, probably, 'My Childhood')
The Silent Partner (1978)
The Brood (1979)
Shivers (1975)
Charley Varrick (1973)
The Shootist (1976)
The Beguiled (1971)
The Heartbreak Kid (1972)
Grey Gardens (1976)
Day for Night (1973)
Martin (1977)
American Graffiti (1973)
Nuits rouges (1974)
Harold and Maude (1971)
Race with the Devil (1975)
Trafic (1971)
Fingers (1978)
Un flic (1972)
Caged Heat (1974)
Heroic Purgatory (1970)
Seven Beauties (1975)
Passe ton bac d'abord (1979)
Smile (1975)
Get Carter (1971)
Two-Lane Blacktop (1971)
Death Race 2000 (1975)
Trash (1970)
Blue Collar (1978)
The Harder They Come (1972)
The Last Picture Show (1971)
The Last Wave (1977)
The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973)
Beware of a Holy Whore
Thieves Like Us (1974)
The Late Show (1977)
Hickey & Boggs
Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970)

Getting down to the final stretch...at this moment, the top 10 comprises five countries and eight directors. The current #1 film is the only film from its country in the top 10. Two top 10 films by the same director are tied.

Shame on you! And of course the director is Tarkovsky. The only question is which film. I naturally had all three of them in my top 10. ;)
Or is swo really talking about Rivette ? :-)

Well, if it is Tarkovsky, that must mean there's only one of your three in the Top 10.
My money's on 'Stalker'
