Here is a recent list of QT's favorite films of all-time. You can see a common theme within the films on this list. I would't necessarily say revenge and retribution is the theme, but I would say 'getting even' is something he values strongly.
Apocalypse Now (Francis Ford Coppola, 1979)
The Bad News Bears (Michael Ritchie, 1976)
Carrie (Brian de Palma, 1976)
Dazed and Confused (Richard Linklater, 1993)
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Sergio Leone, 1966)
The Great Escape (John Sturges, 1963)
His Girl Friday (Howard Hawks, 1939)
Jaws (Steven Spielberg, 1975)
Pretty Maids All in a Row (Roger Vadim, 1971)
Rolling Thunder (John Flynn, 1997)
Sorcerer (William Friedkin, 1977)
Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese, 1976)

I'm fine. I'll just be over here in the corner, shivering with rage.

Actually, it seems very appropriate that the two filmmakers that would inspire people to compare ranked lists of their work would be Tarantino and Wes Anderson, who are the current entry-level auteurs for burgeoning, list-crazed film geeks (check it, old-timers). Don't leave out Fincher, though, and wake me up when we start ranking Roy Del Ruth films.

As well, both are not prolific, so these are easy lists to make. I'm not holding my breath for a Fassbinder list-a-thon.

We did the list thing first for Hitchcock, if I'm remembering correctly

Complete filmographies, ranked? I don't remember that.

Honestly, it's fine to make these kinds of lists, I suppose. People are talking about movies at least. You guys are forgetting Tarantino's E.R. episode, though, which I thought was better than his C.S.I. episode. Next he needs to do an N.C.I.S. episode. Only initialism shows.

EDIT: (Actually, I was thinking of a different episode of E.R. The one he directed is not better than his C.S.I. episode.)

It wasn't for Ford, yet another reason it was silly. Hitch was all features post-Rebecca

Nothing beats his Itchy & Scratchy, though.

Humanizing piece on Tarantino by Brian Koppelman on Grantland, certainly well-timed considering that lots of folks are lobbying accusations of him being calculated by being upset over the script leak.

By the way, anyone interested in me putting in the work to turn this into a proper thread for the Filmmakers subforum? I'd be able to do so in the next few days if a mod was interested in making the proper modifications.

Would agree with that by and large, with the exception of Jackie Brown.

Which ironically has far less of the entertainment value part than the rest of his oeuvre

Really? I always found it just as entertaining as the others

(Well, to be honest, I liked Death Proof, but other than maybe the last 15-minutes, that one was a bit of a drag. The rest all go by fairly quick.)

Perhaps I need to re-watch it (though I've see it two or three times now), but it doesn't hold my attention nearly as much as the rest of his films, particularly the revenge pictures. Though I realize that's becoming more and more of an unpopular opinion.

Biggest fear: He writes a book, someone else adapts it, it is a horrible movie

I know the guy's no Olivier but I'm always delighted when he's on screen. That's got to account for something.
