Re: Cohen Film Collection
For a UK buyer, that price does bring it below the "customs limit".
Can anyone who actually owns the Intolerance blu-ray confirm please if it really is locked to Region A? Beaver says so, but that was also initially claimed for Cohen's Thief of Bagdad, which turned out to be region-free.
I'd also like confirmation that Cohen's Beauty of the Devil is region-locked, though in that case I do expect it to be.
EDIT: According to a new post on blu-ray.com, Beaver is wrong again and Intolerance is region-free, but I'd welcome further confirmation...

Re: Cohen Film Collection
Thanks, Kauno. Unfortunately it's now "currently unavailable" at DVDPlanet (and the price is a bit higher). But I've seen Intolerance enough times - I even own a print - not to be in any hurry!

Re: Cohen Film Collection
Tristana is also region free and not A blocked as dvdbeaver says. I did check it yesterday when arrived.

Thanks, that's a surprise! Are any Cohen blu-rays locked? If even Tristana is region-free, maybe Beauty of the Devil too...?

Re: Cohen Film Collection
Jonathan S, I've checked the Spanish forum I use, but nobody has bought (yet) the Rene Clair BD. Anyway, they confirm that Rene Clement's impressive masterpiece Les maudits is also region B but the English subtitles can not be switched off; dvdbaver says they can be with the control remote and they say is only A region.

Re: Cohen Film Collection
After waiting for them to ship for 9 days I am giving up on dvdplanet. They have so far also failed to reply to my emails. I have now emailed my bank asking them to block payments to dvdplanet. I guess it was too good an offer to be true. I'll order it for a higher price from a company with better customer service. Maybe I'm being unfair but I'm not the most patient customer...Kauno wrote:Intolerance is now 57% off ($21.59) at at DVDPlanet.Finch wrote:It's eye-wateringly expensive. Re: Cohen Film Collection
Their prices for the new releases went up last week. I will wait for them to go down in other sites like amazon too. Right now, importcds has the lowest price tags.

When they had their Kino sale, I ordered The Stranger and The Hitch-Hiker for a combined $23. It took them two weeks to ship (and online it still says pending, even though they arrived). Their service is sketchy at best, but the items cone eventually.RobertB wrote:After waiting for them to ship for 9 days I am giving up on dvdplanet. Cohen's website appears to have been updated. New additions include Kiarostami's The Wind Will Carry Us and Chereau's Queen Margot.

Seems to be an influx of MK2 stuff that Criterion were probably dragging their feet about, plus Ken Loach's BLACK JACK (was that there before?) Which hints at a BFI link up, or swap? (I'm guessing).

Jean-Luc Godard's Hail Mary ("Je Vous Salue, Marie") looks very nice on dvdbeaver
:
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdreview ... l_mary.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
did someone already buy it ?
I'd like to have your feedback regarding the subtitles : is it possible to watch the blu-ray without subtitles ? (because the subtitles were forced (burnt-in) on the Olive releases of some Blu-Ray Jean-Luc Godard movie) and I think that Cohen also put out a French Blu-Ray title (I think it's the J-P Melville's Deux hommes dans Manhattan) which forced English subtitles.
By the way, there is a gorgeous HD (itunes) which hard-coded English subtitles transfer of "Prénom Carmen" / First Name Carmen...
is there a chance that Cohen could release it on bluray ??? [-o<

DVDBeaver says "English, none" which means they're removable, but as ever with DVDBeaver, get a second opinion. Nice to see confirmation of the proper aspect ratio, the inclusion of both short films, and all the extras-- looks like one of the best Godard releases ever in terms of treatment, can't wait!

Re: Cohen Film Collection
Unfortunately no. Lionsgate has the rights to that one (It's a Studio-Canal title), and they have released it on DVD as part of a Godard 4-film set.Rupert Pupkin wrote:By the way, there is a gorgeous HD (itunes) which hard-coded English subtitles transfer of "Prénom Carmen" / First Name Carmen...

yes I have this DVD box set. And the iTunes HD opens with the StudioCanal logo so I guess it's on the hands of StudioCanal then...Feego wrote:Unfortunately no. Yes you can...the feature, the shorts and the interviews have removable subs.

Book of Mary and Hail Mary both look pretty lovely. Haven't checked out any of the extras yet.

So my browser (forced to use IE8 at work) doesn't like the Cohen Films website. Do we have any indication of when The Wind Will Carry Us will be released?

Re: Cohen Film Collection
responding (?) to my own post above. I listened to the Hartley/Schwartz commentary on the Cohen Hail Mary Blu-Ray. Schwartz has very little of interest to say. Hartley makes numerous smart observations about the meanings/motifs in the film and Godard's working methods, but they are seldom developed or meaningfully synched to the film as it's playing. and surprisingly he has little to say about Godard's middle-period style despite it being an obvious and very powerful influence. (I'd also note that Schwartz and Hartley jokingly and jointly shout "Bresson!" when a donkey appears onscreen, but don't seem to be aware that the entire scene constitutes a cluster of references to Bresson's films.)
I really wish that folks doing commentary tracks would sit down with the film a few times and plan out and finesse their remarks--or even do their own audio editing so they can link up their commentary to what's playing onscreen. (I realize that they probably aren't being paid enough to justify this from a financial standpoint). I've no doubt Hartley has a ton to say about Hail Mary but the commentary track we have leaves a lot to be desired. that's particularly regrettable since many viewers find middle and late Godard films difficult and could use a lot of "help" appreciating them.
I can't say anything bad about the transfer, which is gorgeous. And the other special features are quite generous. I'm still very glad we have this.
