They are up there under distribution by IFC, not Criterion.

So now the question is does he have enough material and merit for an Eclipse or just a packed spine number?

I'm sure an Eclipse Set could be put together with All In This Tea and Always For Pleasure.

Great news on Les Blank! I wonder if his estate has entrusted the entire catalog to Janus, or if the deal for Garlic was in place before his passing. There are enough great films for at least one music set and one food set. I imagine they'll go Eclipse due to lack of supplements more than anything else.

Given the quality of their upload I doubt they'd put it out on Blu and since this is as headline a title as Blank has (certainly amongst his five most famous) this can't be chalked up to the film being left as an extra ala The Report.

I had no idea the 101 days of summer gimmick was the explanation for why it's been so long since they've added films to the catalog. At this point, I'm pretty excited every day to see if something new pops up.

Gate of Hell was on Hulu, then they removed it. Annoying.

That's odd. It's still even listed on Criterion's site as available at Hulu.

I noticed there was an expiration date for that title but those have been incorrect before.

It was likely removed by Hulu without Criterion's knowledge. The same thing happened for I Graduated but... and A Straightforward Boy. I emailed Criterion and they said that they didn't realize that they had been removed and put them back up.

Out of curiosity has anyone tried to watch Bandits vs. the Samurai Squadron lately? Every time I try, it plays for a few minutes before going black. If I refresh the screen the same pattern repeats. Strangely, no other Hulu titles do that for me.

I hadn't realized this was a problem. That's kinda ridiculous.

It is ridiculous. However, it means that whenever you notice something drop off hulu, you should send a quick email to Criterion to let them know.

Excitement heavily tempered by the fact they have yet to give Profound Desires of the Gods a physical release. (Yes, I'm aware of and own the MoC, but still.)

Mind-bogglingly great news! (let the blu-ray release date speculation begin).

Yes, this is wonderful news. I've never seen it, but hoped to before submitting my 60s list. At least I'll have the chance to view it tonight.

I have a question for those who have seen it (unfortunately, it may be a few days before I can get around it watching it). According to Hulu the film is about a man who must regain his memory before being executed. I'm assuming that there is a reason given in the movie for why this is. Can someone briefly recount it? I ask because I sometimes teach philosophy through film and this sounds like it might be a good introduction to Lockean theories of personal identity.

Spoiler
They hang him once, but he doesn't actually die, they can hear his heart still beating. Eventually they have no choice but to revive him again and to re-hang him, but when he comes to, he doesn't remember anything, which is a problem because he has to remember or understand his crime, otherwise they can't legally execute him.

This leads to some absurd comedy where they try to re-enact his crime, as they know it through trial evidence. But when his memory starts returning, we begin to see everything from his POV and the isolation he felt in Japan as a Korean immigrant, if my memory of the film is correct.
