Re: Out Of Print: StudioCanal Snatches It All Away
Army of Shadows was the only Melville I needed when this catastrophe struck, after moronically opting to set it off to the side following several Criterion sales.
With my B&N member's discount and Easter coupon, I picked it up 2 weeks ago, the day following the announcement. Total came to $33 and some change after tax, which chaffed me, but I pacified myself by reconciling with the fact that it's better than the alternative.
I went back to said B&N, and lo and behold, Leon Morin, Le Cercle Rouge, Le Doulos, and Marienbad are all on the shelves. People above were dead-on in overestimating the average shopper's OOP awareness. My 14-day return policy is up at the end of the day; I'm debating whether or not to return Army of Shadows, tuck it quietly away behind some junk, and bide my luck until the next sale rolls around in a couple months. At the least, I can pick up the others and just sell them when the prices skyrocket.
What's the consensus here on purchasing additional copies? I suppose it's nice to have one to watch, one to keep sealed, and one (or more) to sell when demand is high, but I don't know if I'm willing to go through all that. Mine are all currently open with the exception of Army of Shadows, which will remain closed.

The time I had a duplicate copy of a recently OOP title, I returned it to B&N so someone else could have it. You are welcome, whoever you are that ended up with that extra Third Man blu.

Well ... Amazon really did come through with that blu of 'Last Year at Marienbad' after all!
I ordered it the day after the OOP announcement and it took them 'til now to ship. I just assumed it wouldn't happen.
Now I just have to decide whether to open it or not. (I've never seen it.)

I can't believe I even have to type this but... open it, and watch it immediately. What you will get from this film is worth far more than the $50 or $60 you'd get for it on ebay in a few years.

Infinitely annoying to order a film you haven't seen just to sit on it like a turtle on its eggs. Open it!

Yes, dear God, open it. Even if you're disappointed, it'll be worth it.

And I suggest you also make sure to watch both of the shorts: Toute la memoire du monde & Le chant du styrene.

Re: Out Of Print: StudioCanal Snatches It All Away
So I picked up Army of Shadows and Léon Morin, Priest blu-rays at my local Barnes & Nobles for 39.99 each before my order from Import CDs was shipped (it was delayed for 2 weeks with no updates). Now I have a dilemma - to return it to B&N for full refund, to sell it to someone online for that price or wait for the price to skyrocket and sell it then...

This is the right answer. Netflix it and see if it's something you will want to watch again - which means you can then keep it and forget about it being OOP in the first place. At worst you have an amazing film that practically demands repeat viewings or you sell it on EBay for a profit.Noiradelic wrote:Or rent it.bdsweeney wrote:Now I just have to decide whether to open it or not. Amazingly the Le Doulos I order over the weekend shipped Monday - but still nothing on Le Cercle Rouge I ordered the day of the announcement. Has anyone gotten LCR from Amazon?

If anybody has a B&N near them (with a media section), and are looking for these, I found ALL of these BDs stocked on the shelf.

I just noticed that the 10 years of Rialto set has finally gone completely out of print. It survived the first couple of rounds of the Studiocanal massacre, but I guess this last wave was it. It had been "In print" at the start of this year if I remember correctly.

Got shipping notice from Amazon on my copy of Leon Morin. I've also ordered Marienbad, so that one's still in limbo.
EDIT: Received Leon Morin[i/] on Wed., 4/24. Amazon shows Marienbad with a 4/26 shipping date. <fingers crossed>
