Re: Criterion on Hulu

#601 Post by stroszeck »

I never really used hulu until this weekend but noticed many many titles that have yet to make it into the collection which bear the "criterion collection" moniker. Are we expecting all these titles to eventually be released on criterion? The reason I'm asking is because many of them have never even been mentioned on the forthcoming discussion thread either.

All of them could be released by Criterion, but considering their release rate it is unlikely for all of them to be.

It looked like a very good VHS transfer, clean & unblemished, but hazy.

I haven't been on hulu in a while & was impressed by the number of titles to choose from. But I was annoyed at how many commercials there were, seemed worse than regular tv (ie. TCM): a group of 3-30 second ads every 5 minuntes ( from a group of about 10 ads which were repeated over & over). Last time I had checked out hulu it was more like 3 or 4 1-ad interruptions over the course of a whole movie. If you pay for the service is the amount of commercial interruption still that bad?

I ended up staying home all weekend & catching up on some Kobayashi, Oshima, Ozu & Nomura. The amount of Japanese titles was quite impressive. Any plans on creating a separate section for Hulu titles not on disc & providing individual threads for each title (and porting the discussion over to the Criterion section once a disc is available)? Might help make it easier for us to see what's available. Hulu sure doesn't make it easy & they're not on Criterion's website.

I believe they are mentioned (or at least intended to) on the first stickied thread of this subforum.

I forgot about that. The most recent titles haven't been added, but there's a lot that I hadn't even noticed, like 35 titles by Keisuke Kinoshita. But I'd also like to see some discussion or reviews of titles. Many have few, if any, comments on IMDB, as well as very few votes, so it's hard to gauge which I should prioritize in my list of must see hulu titles.

The two most recent Ichikawa additions should be top priorities (though I believe they are regularly available outside the US). Easily some of his best work.

It feels really good to ask this, 11 years after seeing Good Morning for the first time and being hungry ever since...but are there any Ozu films which AREN'T on Hulu now?

I have no idea, but the most likely answer is The Munekata Sisters. If that's there, it's probable that everything else is!

It doesn't look like A Hen in the Wind is available on Hulu. </responseToRhetoricalQuestion>

I subscribe to Hulu+ and have never had a movie interrupted by commercials. In my service at least, only TV shows are stricken with commercials.

Dragnet Girl, making the upcoming BFI gangster films set still a must-buy.

Well I called it.

Yes, It's Itunes, but I thought this was better (all streaming news should go here from now on?), but..

Criterioncast posted that Hitchcock's Sabotage and Young and Innocent are up on Criterion's Itunes page!

Slightly odd since these two films were released by MGM. (I assume that their rights expired - the set is OOP - and Criterion licensed these two (+ others?) from Gaumont or ITV?) I guess we will still need to wait for final confirmation on Number 17 and Secret Agent, but this news is promising for those titles. Is The Lodger also with Gaumont? (I see it was released by Network, not studio Canal in the UK - thus it is likely to make an appearance from Criterion as well).

OK, but why iTunes and not Hulu for these?

Because it's not subscription-based would be my guess.

Does anyone know if I can download a complete Criterion titles list with directors name. Hulu Plus took out the sorting function by directors, and it is time consuming to find films I want to watch.
Titles list in Excel files would be nice.

The Criterion website itself has such a list if that helps.

To minimize your work, click here

Remember, this list of films include only physical releases by CC. It does not include the movies on Hulu Plus that are not released on DVD or BD.

I have a excel file of the Hulu films not previously on physical media. It's to big to post here, so PM me if you would like a copy.

Might you be willing to post that as a public Google doc and then share the link here?

Not sure if this link is working yet, but was the best I could do mid-commute. If the permissions don't work, I'll play with it when I make it home.

If anyone cares, here's a spreadsheet I put together for the films in the collection (discs, not hulu). You can sort by year, director, or country, and it keeps track of what percent you own or have seen (the color coding has to be entered manually)

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... sp=sharing" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Does anybody have a list of titles that first appeared on Hulu but then moved to Criterion or Eclipse?
