I agree, and I think this is the best cover of the bunch. Though for all the translations listed, it's missing the IMDb title The Sun Legend of the End of the Tokugawa Era, a fact which temporarily prompted me to doubt the film's existence.

Also agreed that a picture of Yamanaka (like for the Mizo or Naruse sets) would be preferable to the present H&PB zoom-in.

Despite owning a large amount of DVDs, I'd somehow never acquired a Steelbook before now. I got Lifeboat, Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend from "bestmediagroup" (Eureka) through Amazon when they were dirt cheap and each one is gorgeous. I never saw the appeal until now but these look fantastic.

Yeah, the Double Indemnity one in particular made me want to go back and upgrade all the blus I've already bought- it looks much better in person than it did online. I wish they'd have had a similar deal on Mabuse, though.

If you e-mail [email protected] he'll usually respond quickly with a free replacement.

Hey, it's Ron Swanson on the top right of the Birth of a Nation cover!

The Kuroneko cover is wonderful but I already have the Crit BD. I like the new Tabu cover and look forward to seeing the film in HD (the only title I'm going to get from this line-up). I'm just glad that none of the new covers are as eye-wateringly bad as the Bakumatsu one (the centennial sheet on the back of the booklet was more aesthetically pleasing; I don't understand why MoC had to slap the terrible purple tint on it).

Curiously, I feel the exact opposite.

MoC has a tendency to use the most boring typefaces.

Really like the Birth of a Nation cover, I'd love them to do more covers like that for the silents. And it's ah... certainly better than the old Eureka DVD cover. Wish they'd have stuck with the old artwork for Tabu though.

I like the new Tabu cover, but the old was certainly more evocative.

For some reason I keep thinking of Jean Cocteau's films when I see the new Tabu cover, and that's by no means a bad thing.

I hope that at least Kuroneko's cover will be changed, because it's terrible, especially when compared to the fantastic Onibaba cover. The rest are more tolerable, but still disappointing.

Nick's absence is definitely felt when it comes to the covers.

Surely they could have based their Le Pont du Nord cover on this instead:

That is a prime example of why the original poster is not always the best idea (reminds me of when, for Vampyr, they replaced the creepy POV shot of the old vampire with a way too cluttered original artwork).

That's a shit VHS cover. This is the original poster:

The KURONEKO cover is embarrassingly poor and will hit sales. What a shame.

If I had never seen Kuroneko I'd assume she was eating a furry log.

What stands out to me is that if you look through the MOC catalog, there are very few covers that seem to be based in shots from the film. But that's been happening a bunch lately. And sometimes (Kuroneko) those shots look really weird out of context...

It's because it's easier and much quicker to choose a production still and slap some text on it. I tried to avoid it at all costs.

Though I would prefer otherwise, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one thinking Kuroneko's cover is quite bad, especially while compared to the Criterion's one.

The only thing that jars with me on the new Kuroneko cover is that they went overboard again (Bakumatsu being the previous offender) with the different titles (the English title, the English translation of the original Japanese title, the romaji and the original Japanese spelling). Agreed though that both the original and the Criterion cover were still better.

The covers of all the upgrades are downgrades, as far as I'm concerned. Birth of a Nation is great and at least Le pont du Nord is a nice still, and means that Le pont du Nord is being released.

I have preferred the MoC covers over many of the Criterions and Kinos for a while now, but have to admit that this latest round is a let down, except for Birth of a Nation.
I would buy the Rivette even if it came in a brown paper bag, but come on MoC, you used to be the one label who I would most often point to for great covers, what do I say to friends and colleagues now?
