I don't know how accurate this information is but indiewire has an article about classic British films not available on disc which mentions that IFC owns the rights to Distant Voices, Still Lives. (They state IFC has the television rights and speculate that they probably also have home video and theatrical.) Davies does have an phantom page on the Criterion website...

Sweet Jesus, a Criterion reissue of Distant Voices, Still Lives on Blu-Ray would be f-ing awesome.

(And while I'm at it, they should do one on his other masterpiece, The Long Day Closes - a new 35mm print was making the rounds earlier this year.)

While we're idly speculating, why not bung both autobiographical trilogies in a big Blu box together. Throw in Of Time and the City as an extra and you could call it "The Liverpool Films."

A Long Day Closes on BD would be a dream come true (found Distant Voices... easier to admire than to love). Get on to it, Criterion!

I thought I remembered CC declaring at one point "our first Davies isn't likely to be a big box," which is too bad because what they really ought to do is replicate the BFI box and just bump it up to Blu.

It's great to see the support for Davies - it's frustrating how much of a cult director he really is. When they held a retrospective at BAM, I couldn't find anyone who was familiar with his work. These are the same people I'd go with to see any film by Rivette, Bresson, Tarr, etc. but Davies? They barely knew who he was. I always thought he was appreciated in the UK, but even there, it's a struggle to get known - I came across one article where he was applying for a national grant about 10 years ago, and the person handling his query asked him "have you made any films before?"

At least his star seems to be relatively in the ascendancy post his BFI fellowship and the demise of his adversaries at the UKFC. Looks like he's getting Grassic Gibbon's 'Sunset Song' off the ground at last.

Top of the Lake (Jane Campion) is getting a gala screening at Sundance, where it will play as a 6 hour long film. Seems similar to how IFC released Carlos.

I imagine if it's good Criterion would love to release more Campion.

According to Deadline, IFC is acquiring the rights to Ain't Them Bodies Saints. Reviews out of Sundance have been good to excellent.

They seem to have a decent relationship with SPC but you're right IFC would have of course been better as SPC will handle the first release. Maybe a box set many years from now will come to fruition.

Paul Schrader's much-buzzed (and not necessarily positively) The Canyons has been picked up by IFC.
