Criterion and IFC

IFC has picked up Philippe Garrel's film A Burning Hot Summer, but I can't imagine Criterion would pick this one up, although it would be one of the ballsiest moves in years on their part if they put it out on the mainline.

Garrel in the collection would be great! I'm sure Kent Jones would be more than happy to participate and an interview with John Cale would be awesome. Louis being in the film doesn't hurt its chances of moving units, either.

IFC has acquired all US rights to the new Ken Burns documentary "The Central Park Five" which is playing at the Toronto film festival. I could certainly see Criterion being interested in a Ken Burns release. We'll see what kind of reviews it gets.

Why would it be ballsy to release A burning hot summer? Is it a very unusual film?

If they're still frightened to death of releasing a Rivette film after all these years, Garrel seems a very unlikely choice.

IFC is acquiring Noah Baumbach's Frances Ha. This has been getting rave reviews out of Telluride and Toronto. We'll almost certainly see Criterion handle the eventual dvd/blu next year.

So IFC picked up Noah Baumbach's Frances Ha and Mira Nair's The Reluctant Fundamentalist. Wonder if Criterion will snap either up. Frances Ha has gotten great reviews thus far. The Reluctant Fundamentalist not so much.

Reviews for Byzantium and Reluctant Fundamentalist have been across the board poor. I doubt Criterion will release either. Frances Ha will get the Criterion treatment for sure. Too bad they haven't pick up Too the Wonder.

Baumbach has yet to direct a film that was anything less than a five-star affair. Now, that's what a minority opinion looks like. But it's also my own genuine opinion... :-$

I wish that could go without saying. I will never understand why people don't find Margot at the Wedding fully engaging.

I don't know, I've found the Baumbach I've seen to be less interesting than many of his predecessors and contemporaries working in similar territory, including Margot, which engaged me with most of the performances (excluding miscast yet doing his best Jack Black), the writer/director's attention to character, also Harris Savides' cinematography, but ultimately felt a little thin storywise and so overlong and not necessarily justified as a feature length experience. It made me wish Woody Allen in his prime had made the film instead.

IFC is acquiring the rights to Brian DePalma's Passion. The reviews were pretty lousy. I seriously doubt Criterion will be interested.

Hopefully they grab the Malick! Nobody else seems to want it.

Reviews for Passion have been no worse than Tiny Furniture and quite a few critics have been enthusiastic about it. Given their relationship with De Palma, I wouldn't count a Criterion edition out yet.

I wish Margot at the Wedding would get criterion treatment...
Even if it does involve break-ups that would be part of the process of making the film,
and would be relevant to the filming or editing of the movie....

I would bet my left nut that Passion gets a Criterion release along with another film.

I thought it was a shame that CC passed on Mia Hansen-Løve's UN AMOUR DE JEUNESSE [2011] (which also goes by the clumsy non-literal GOODBYE FIRST LOVE). I believe it was with IFC and has gone to MPI. It's a fine film. The Artifiical Eye Blu is really great though (Region B). Doesn't bode well for FATHER OF MY CHILDREN on CC Blu.

I think the De Palma would make it because they can do a "Blow-Out" and pair it with an earlier film
to double the chances of sales.
