No Man of Her Own is up in Netflix Instant for folks wanting to taste test before buying. Sadly, I think it's one of the only Olive titles you can get from them in any form. ](*,)

If you're in NYC, I've noticed that the public library gets a lot of Olive releases (which would theoretically make them good candidates for ILL if you're not in New York). Won't help with the Blu-rays, though.

I grabbed meself a copy of this label's new transfer/disc of THE COLOSSUS OF NEW YORK. The disc is pretty barebones, but the film has been screaming out for this kind of treatment for a very long time... this is a title that should be in the process of receiving repeated reccs on the Horror List thread.

Eeeeeerie film, definite and little mentioned precursor to ROBOCOP only far more effective and chilling.

The plot is pretty pedestrian and one that's seen innumerable reworkings since Whale's Frankenstein: young brilliant scientist gets killed prematurely, and his father, a brilliant scientist himself, keeps his young son's brain alive. and eventually plops it into a fully automatized human assembly that lopes around and speaks in a monotone that comes and goes like a short wave station in correspondence to the brains strength of connection to the robot at any given moment.

Since this is a sci-horror film, things don't quite go as planned, and the hand of fate must smack dad down for fucking with the natural forces of life in the universe. But this colossus is one of the most chilling "monsters" in all the genre; the makers thought through their premise completely, to therefore render what it would actually be like--what one would initially witness-- were such a thing to be accomplished.

You see the wobbling cobweb clearing as the thing becomes aware of itself... feeling down into the contraption it now inhabits as father tutors it on how to automate it and walk and talk. . the sense of horror at the first glimpse in the mirror . . . the voice coming and going like a poorly received radio station as the brain initially fails to master its inner dashboard.

Similarities also abound to the Golem, what with a small child having access to shutting the behemoth down with a single simple action . . . .

This movie was a relatively late discovery for me-- I didn't see it for the first time until about 2 yrs ago, which made its unexpected excellence that much more of a surprise and a delight. Hugely recommend this disc.

Also, Pony Express, the 1938 version of The Buccaneer, Hit!, and Badge 373 are listed on Amazon for release on April 24th. The latter two will also be available on Blu-ray. Olive is really opening the floodgates on Paramount titles over the next couple of months, aren't they?

Just got through watching Sands of Kalahari, and man was this an absolutely unexpected treat. I went into it thinking it would be just some generic story about a bunch of people who crash in the middle of the desert and try to survive. While that was the basic set up of the piece I was just taken aback by the absolute sheer brutality of the film, particularly the violence which for 1965 was very graphic. I really can't believe this one is virtually unknown and have to give props to Olive for restoring it (although there were zero features on the dvd). Gorgeous cinematography, top notch performances and a surprisingly effective surreal/quiet ending. Makes a great double bill with The Naked Prey. Highly recommended.

Amazon has just listed Silver City, Denver and Rio Grande, and Run for Cover for pre-order; the projected release date is May 22nd.

Maybe with aspect ratio fixes, though? Is Run For Cover 4:3 on NF streaming?

If that's the case, it would've been nice to get a box set of those Mitchell Leisens, instead of just No Man of Her Own.

It's open-matte like a lot of their VistaVision titles, probably left over transfers from Encore-- I have no doubt the DVDs with be widescreen
