Is THE TRIAL likely for today?

The Trial is not on listed on the Criterion Cast tumblr and he posted the link on his personal twitter account, so I'm not expecting it but it would be a nice surprise. (We already have 5 new spines this month supposedly!) Criterion does need to rescue The Trial out of PD hell at some point though.

The DVD is currently listed as 15.95 on the website (so 29.99 price point?) So maybe there's still more disc features to be announced? Or the price is a typo somewhere?

Gosha and Preminger yay!

The Preminger is definitely exciting, as is the Marker upgrade. I'll still probably buy the Gosha, but if it costs the same as a full featured disc it's really going to piss me off. I'm kind of upset even if it's a bargain, it's not a late-period curiosity from an otherwise established director or something the way Identification of a Woman and The Makioka Sisters are

They didn't put extras on the lone other Gosha film they've released so maybe they don't find him interesting which would sicken me, but of well. What sort of extras would be good for the film?

Three Outlaw is now listed as $23.96 on blu ray on Criterion's website. So I guess those extras ain't coming.

Hell, I don't know, but Gosha seems like an obscure enough figure that you could fill at least a couple of decent size features just talking about who he was, how his career worked and so forth without being redundant. I suppose I can't complain too much, as it's essentially an Essential Art House release with an astonishingly nice cover at this point.

Perhaps they just felt that the first Preminger and first James Stewart film in the Collection needed to be commemorated with the round number!

(Actually I tell a lie about James Stewart, since there are those Vertigo clips in Sans Soleil, or at least in the extra features, which makes it a neat coincidence that they're both coming out in the same month!)

2012 is looking great so far - while I like the idea of the Blu upgrades I'm also happy that there is a move towards more totally new (at least to me!) releases, even if they might be bare bones like Three Outlaw Samurai.

I'm just wondering where Criterion's stash of Chaplin is hiding- they've put out People on Sunday, The Complete Jean Vigo, and The Phantom Carriage between now and when the last Chaplin came out, so it can't be that they're afraid to release anything silent (or semi-silent.)

That sounds more like Masters of Cinema. Cronos and Stagecoach, for example, were announced more than a year after they were hinted in the newsletter. I seriously doubt that Summer Hours or some of those other IFC titles went into the production before Stagecoach or Cronos.

Is it a problem in terms of PQ that World on a Wire is 212 minutes on one BR disc? That's slightly longer than Seven Samurai, on which all of the extras are relegated to a second disc, and Seven Samurai, I'm guessing, is more forgiving of compression because it isn't in color.

Perhaps somebody who has watched the new Fanny and Alexander set can put my fears to rest?

I've been eagerly looking forward to WoaW since I watched it on Hulu a while back, and I kind of assumed all along that it would be a two disc thing along the lines of S.S. just because of its length. I'd be happier were there more extras in what was announced today, but I'll be happy enough if the picture looks fabulous.

Maybe we'll get a Chaplin twofer, like with Chabrol & Suzuki: The Gold Rush & City Lights have been having a lot of buzz, but I'd like to see The Kid earlier rather than later, but I'd also like to see the unedited original version of the movie.

I seem to remember The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou getting the 300 spine number when the rest of the Collection was still around the 270 mark, though I cannot recall too many other big jumps forward in number like that.

The big example of a gap being left and then filled is of course spine #1, where they had pencilled in Grand Illusion as being the primary release for a long time but eventually were waiting for better elements (I think) for so long that it ended up being released after the first fifty spine numbers, at around the time Criterion were changing their logo into the line one (which is why Grand Illusion never had one of the oldest looking "The Criterion Collection" logos).
