The picture was posted to the facebook page 2x, one right after the other, indicating to me that it's a double clue: the second clue of course being that the movie in the billboard is also on Criterion's release schedule.

Also, Criterion having a Facebook page is itself a hint that tomorrow they'll be announcing The Social Network.

That's quick for WoaW, isn't it? Just played theatrically here in Chicago a few weeks ago, and in the past there's always (IIRC) been a longer lag than that.

The Red Shoes blu was announced a good month before I saw it in theaters so it's nothing particularly unique (and technically House is still playing in theaters).

Well, I just mean from when it plays here in Chicago, not theatrically in general. I saw The Red Shoes in December 2009, and it was announced by Criterion the next March and released in July. I saw House theatrically March 1, 2010, and it was announced by Criterion in June for an October release. So in both cases a full three-month difference from theatrical to announcement, which seems about average if not a little less than average to me (still waiting on Rashomon, after seeing the Janus reissue in October 2009 ... I wonder what the deal is with that).

But I just saw World on a Wire October 24. Obviously this is an observation that is dubiously local and there's no hard-and-fast rule here, but I didn't expect to see it from Criterion for a while yet. Surprised, is all.

If they're really doing Vanya, wouldn't an Andre upgrade make a lot of sense?

Did someone in the know say February would be a big month? So far nothing 9/10 out of 10. The only must buy for me is the Fassbinder & that's because I've liked most of his work (but haven't seen this yet). I hope they do pad with a lot of BR upgrades

Jesus, Criterion has one hell of a Louis Malle boner. He's got to be one of their most-released directors at this point, right?

It's not their fault on this one. As has been reiterated time and again Janus bought the rights to the majority of the Malles in one lump sum. Anyways these films are pretty good any way.

Well he hasn't surpassed Kurosawa yet, but he might be beating Fellini & Bergman. Unfortunately it's not the releases i'd like to see, namely a Trilogy box, Elevator To The Gallows, and Dinner upgraded to Blu....all the others I could pass on.

This will probably be the biggest different in quality between an exisiting Blu-ray and a new one in history. The French one looks absolutely dire.

FWIW, according to Criterion's site:
  • 1. Kurosawa = 36 titles
    2. Bergman = 26
    3. Ozu = 22
    4. Malle = 18
    5. Fellini = 13
There's a problem in the way the site compiles the stats. Box sets count as a title, and the individual films in a set also count as titles. So every box set bumps a director's count by one. Malle has two such sets (Eclipse 2 and the Trilogy), so the actual count of individual titles is 16. Kurosawa is an even bigger mess with all the EAH boxes (including the big one with 50 DVDs) counting as titles. Near as I can tell without the benefit of coffee yet, that reduces AK's actual title count to 28.

In the Collection right now there are:

26 Kurosawa
19 Bergman (counting F&A as one)
17 Ozu
16 Malle
9 Fellini
