It may be a ways a way...but both do have Blu futures!

Of course, that doesn't explicitly say Warners will be releasing it.

Yeah, I saw that post. But the fact it didn't explicitly say that Warner was releasing it I thought it was worth mentioning that post. Who knows, if there is a Criterion edition coming maybe it's one of those parrtner deals like the older Disney titles and Benjamin Button.

I know that Criterion was working on Badlands at one time along with a few other Warner titles. It has been a long time since I heard anything about these though, and have to wonder if the deal fell apart.

Since there's already a Gaumont Blu of A Man Escaped released in France, I would expect Blu-ray from Criterion should they release it.

They all seem main line worthy to me. I can't imagine them all going Eclipse, especially since they're such an odd combo (The Trials and Tribulations of Robert Bresson, perhaps). On the other hand, I thought the Pickpocket and Mouchette discs were great, but it seems like they've struggled to dig up supplements for the other Bresson films.

does anyone know anything about ownership of A Walk In The Sun? It was on TCM earlier today and I had forgotten what an under-rated WWII film it is. A classic in every sense of the term. Rights on imdb are a parade of crappy companies like Madacy and there have been various shitty releases....it absolutely needs proper restoration.

It's public domain, and sadly Criterion seems to have learned that the reward for restoring PD titles is having your new master pirated and losing money.

I suspect that Criterion may have had two different Warner related deals in the works at one time. It seems odd to me that if Criterion only ever had one shot at licensing from Warner Brothers that they would even bother going after titles like Barcelona and Suburbia.

It does make sense if we consider that they may have been working on a separate deal with Rob Reiner's production company Castle Rock Entertainment. While owned by Warners, Castle Rock is still independently ran. I don't think Warners have even theatrically distributed a Castle Rock title in a long time. Recent efforts like Bernie was sold to Millennium Films, Friends with Benefits to Screen Gems, Faster to CBS films, etc.

I wouldn't mind a Castle Rock deal. In addition to the titles mentioned (which both Stillman and Linklater confirmed was at least under discussion) , it's fun to think about possible titles like Before Sunrise/Before Sunset, Lone Star, Waiting For Guffman, Best in Show, etc.

The last title I can think of that was a WB release was Michael Clayton, which didn't even have the Castle Rock card at the beginning.

My guess is Trial of Joan of Arc will be $30 barebones while the other two will be standard $40 releases.

I wonder if anyone knows who has the rights to Lancelot du Lac in the US? I presumed it was Criterion, seeing as it's a fairly well known/major title of his, and was an ex-New Yorker (?) like The Devil Probably - which Olive Films announced as having many months ago.. and I'm sure they would have taken Lancelot if someone else hadn't first... Just a hunch.

The Last Days Of Disco is a Castle Rock title I believe, and I remember reading in the CC wiki one release they were working on in the laserdisc days was A Few Good Men.

Last Days of Disco was produced by Castle Rock but Focus Features still owns North American distribution rights. Criterion licensed it from Focus/Universal.

Whatever, it's all speculation and there's a lot of plausible titles on there.

I think City Lights (or the Gold Rush), Wild Strawberries, and the Game all seem like they're inevitably going to happen sooner or later, and possibly sooner- and Great Expectations and Oliver Twist seem like an obvious pair of candidates for rerelease, since they're some of the only $40 price point bare bones movies left in the collection (afaik.) Plus, there's that hint that might be a Noel Coward/Lean collaboration box, so other early Lean would go nicely with that.

I'd be pretty happy if they did a blu of Z- that '2012' picture they released last year implied a My Dinner With Andre rerelease, so it certainly seems possible they're going to break the 450 spine number barrier soon.
