Re: 594 Godzilla
The Godzilla sell sheets actually feature the Classic Media logo in addition to the Toho logo, which is...interesting. Wonder if they might be collaborating on anything else.

Re: 594 Godzilla
It surprises me that Classic Media licensed the film to Criterion. Strange that not all of the supplements from the old release are on the new one. As for other possible titles...Classic Media actually have the rights to the Tony Richardson film A Taste of Honey which has not been released in R1.Jeff wrote:The sell sheets actually feature the Classic Media logo in addition to the Toho logo, which is...interesting. They are treated as public domain titles but Classic Media are also the official "rights" holder for the Anthony Mann films Raw Deal and T-Men.
If there is any deal, I would bet on those three at least.

Ooooh, those are in dire need of better transfers, and would fit quite nicely in the Collection.ianungstad wrote:They are treated as public domain titles but Classic Media are also the official "rights" holder for the Anthony Mann films Raw Deal and T-Men.

Re: 594 Godzilla
Hmm. Seems like Classic Media also owns the Monte Hellman films The Shooting and Ride in the Whirlwind. (which we know are both coming) They also seem to own Jack Clayton's A Room at the Top which Criterion uploaded to Hulu about the same time as Godzilla. These all seem to be part of a library they bought from the defunct Continental Distributing. Classic Media had licensed these films to VCI for a time. (VCI also released their own versions of the two Anthony Mann films T-Men and Raw Deal.) These have all been out of print for years. Looks like Criterion scooped all these up at some point.
Classic Media also licensed Raw Deal, T-Men; the Godzilla films and various cartoons (Casper, Magoo, Underdog) to Sony Wonder in the past.

I'd prefer Taffik myself! (Although the Soderbergh film is almost as good in its own right!)mfunk9786 wrote:Perkins Cobb wrote:Wake me up when it's Trafic on Blu.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.

Does anybody recognize that "CJ" logo? Just wondering what other company has a hand in this.

Yes, it's on a lot of releases of Japanese films. I mostly see it on Animeigo's releases, but I think it was also on Funimation's Linda, Linda, Linda release.

It is a "Content Japan" logo. It signifies a legit release and, supposedly, fights piracy. Here is a pdf that explains

Hmm...could be bull but a poster on mubi.com is claiming that a box set of Wim Wender's road trilogy is penciled in for a June 2012 release. He also claims that Criterion have a Chris Marker Eclipse set coming soon with 12 films/shorts. Both would be exciting (and plausible) releases. Hope he's on the level.

Hmmm. The prediction of 2012 box sets is getting quite crowded. Frampton and Apu pretty much confirmed at Wexner. The Pasolinis and Quatsi also likely, if those scribbles where deciphered correctly. The Wenders and a remote possibility of Oshima's Youth films would put that at six boxes. A tantalizing thought, but something that is not very likely. (However, I do think an upgrade of the Inagaki box to blu is coming in the next couple months)

Could be that's why the January release slate was so uncharacteristically light.jwd5275 wrote:Hmmm. The prediction of 2012 box sets is getting quite crowded.

There were about five box sets listed on that facebook 2012 preview picture, so the Wenders one wouldn't surprise me.

Apu might be a 2013 release (they said it will take some time). But don't forget about a BRD Trilogy re-release, though don't know when that might be looked at.jwd5275 wrote:Hmmm. Have we seen any entire multiple-film box sets upgraded to blu yet?

They are supposedly working on the Koker Trilogy too.
Can't wait for 2012's monthly giant boxed sets.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Criterion did say it will be at least a year for the Apu set in their Wexler Q+A, so it's reasonable to think it might not be solicited till 2013. Would the Frampton set be a box? I'm not familiar with the material...I sort of imagined the Frampton and Downey sets to be similar to the Painleve or Brackage releases and not full on boxsets.

How is the Brakhage set not considered a boxset considering even on Blu it takes up three discs. The Frampton set will undoubtedly be like that one though.

Re: Forthcoming Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.
Well the blu version of By Brackage is certainly a box since it has both volumes packaged together in a slipcover. The individual volumes, along with releases like the Painleve and Beastie Boys set are packaged more like a regular Criterion release compared to Criterion's more elaborate boxsets. In a box you would have each feature on it's own disc with film specific extras. I was just implying that I don't think that the Frampton and Downey sets are going to be these $80 MSRP monsters, so the amount of big boxsets next year might not be as excessive as it initially appears.
