Hereafter was fantastic. As was Invictus and Changeling. I've noted a general critical shift away from Eastwood lately but it's inscrutable to me as to why since afaic there's been no decline in quality on his end.

Wow. Well, those are some controversial opinions. I think the critical treatment of Eastwood has always been pretty fair. If he makes a great film like Million Dollar Baby or Gran Torino, he gets his credit.

I have nothing against Invictus, and Changeling is probably my favourite of his recent output. Hereafter, on the other hand, I found rather embarrasing. From the uneven script to the crude visualization of the afterlife, I found the movie altogether uninvolving, and consider it one of the lowpoint of Eastwood's career (at least The Rookie and Heartbreak Ridge are occasionally fun...). I seem to recall finding one of the three stories in Hereafter rather moving at times, and thinking how good a movie it could have made on its own, had it not been surrounded by all the shit. Now, only a month or so later, I fail to remember what it was that moved be. Probably some moments of the story set in London, but the fact that I've allready forgotten what it was doesn't do the movie any favors, as far as my estimation of it's qualities are concerned. And I went in wanting to like this, as I will when I finally get to see his Hoover pic.

Couldn't have said it better. I'm only a moderate fan of Eastwood but I do find myself rooting for him every time he comes out with something. I really hope this can rise above cliche. Just a run down of what Hoover did and some bullshit psychological motivation provided by mother isn't enough.

Don Coscarelli's forthcoming adaptation of David Wong's John Dies At The End. Finished reading the book on Saturday and loved it - looks like they just might do it justice, though I'm a little unconvinced by the leads so far.

As a confirmed hater of Foer's pre(co)cious slop about pre(co)cious people, I'm biased here. But "maudlin" and "trite" seem to fit the bill. The thing looks shellacked with phony epiphanies and bogus wonder. It has the trappings of standard, crowd-pleasing award bait, but I'm guessing that it will be a soft bomb and not exactly draw fevered praise. I admit mild curiosity as to what Sydow and Jeffrey Wright are doing in it, but––ugh. And shamelessly ending the trailer with the lines "I love you" and "I'm right here if you need me" makes the film look about as emotionally nuanced as a chainsaw.

Well, I'm a fan of Foer's, and of the book in particular. It's really a big-hearted novel, definitely wearing that heart on its sleeve(jacket).

The trailer? Yeah. It couldn't be more obvious, distilling it to its basest emotions. It seems to make literal what was filtered from an intentionally naive pov.

The book is told from the vantage point of a precocious, hyper-sensitive child. The film, it seems, is told from Scott Rudin's/Stephen Daldry's/Eric Roth's view of the book.
