Re: Cinema Guild
Any reason why the new Cinema Guild releases have such long shipping times on Amazon? Is it an Amazon problem or a Cinema Guild production problem?
Also the last two films I hoped to see skipped over Chicago (Strange case and Aurora), I can't believe the Music Box or Gene Siskel managed to not pick them up for at least week. Hopefully this will not be the case for Cinema Guild's next three films which I'd like to see: The Turin Horse, The Day He Arrives, and Anatolia. Would be able to see two of them at the Chicago film festival, but the schedule is really working against me.

Re: Cinema Guild
It's an Amazon problem. They under-estimated demand on these last three titles (DAGUERREOTYPES, NE CHANGE RIEN and STRANGE CASE OF ANGELICA) and under-ordered. They've since re-ordered and are re-stocking their inventory. So as of this morning, both DAGUERREOTYPES and NE CHANGE RIEN are in stock and available for next day delivery. The same should happen with ANGELICA very soon.heredity4me wrote:Any reason why the new Cinema Guild releases have such long shipping times on Amazon? Of course, all these titles are always available on our site. Usually, at lower prices.
As for theatrical, we always try to book our films in as many cities as possible. Unfortunately, all the local art houses in Chicago passed on both AURORA and ANGELICA. The Siskel did play both films as part of their European Union Film Festival, but declined to give them a week-long engagement.
Our current film, THE INTERRUPTERS, is currently playing in Chicago and will be returning to the Siskel in October. We'd like to think our three next releases (and all future releases for that matter) will also open in Chicago.
The first reviews of the STRANGE CASE OF ANGELICA blu-ray are coming in...
Matthew Lucas at From the Front Row:
Also, a great write-up from Dennis Lim in the LA Times.De Oliveira's sly and haunting exploration of perception through art feels even more potent on blu-ray, even if the film's content hasn't changed. There's just something about the perfect images that enhance the director's vision and turn them into something almost transcendent. The Strange Case of Angelica isn't just one of the finest films of 2010, it's one of the must-own blu-rays of 2011. Kudos, Cinema Guild. This one is a home run.
Thanks.

That's strange. ANGELICA went out on Tuesday via regular mail so it should be arrriving any day now. But the other 2 went out a while ago so you should have received them. Can you email me off list and we'll sort it out and reship if necessary? [email protected]

Ne change rien is out already? So much for relying on Netflix availability dates.

BTW, look for the moment in the L'architecte doc, about halfway through, where Oliveira elaborates on his inspiration for ANGELICA. Its pretty interesting, but also pretty surreal, since the doc is from 1992.
Oh, and James Quandt's commentary is like a master class on Oliveira!

Wow, I guess he has had enough time to think up projects to last several life times, even by his standards.

Does anyone know the name of the song/performer in In the City of Sylvia where Xavier is staring at the goths in the bar? I checked the songs in the credits against Youtube and other sources, but I've had no luck.

No, this one is sung by a man. It's at the end of the scene, too. The Blondie came much earlier.

Psyched that you're releasing this. It never came to New Zealand so this is a must buy for me.

Re: Cinema Guild
I just opened my factory-sealed copy of Strange Case of Angelica that I ordered through my local video store; it is missing the included booklet. Has this happened to anyone else? The manager of the videostore said she would talk to the distributor about it, so hopefully this can be rectified easily.

Re: Cinema Guild
My copy doesn't work on my Momitsu. It starts to load up, and then, nothing at all.
This is most likely a flaw with the player, not the disc, as my Momitsu has farted on a few other discs (albeit in different ways), and the disc does play absolutely fine on my brother's PS3.

Re: Cinema Guild
My piece on Angelica over at PopMatters. One aspect of this release I didn't get into was just how much I thoroughly loved the documentary. It's a rare and remarkably detailed portrait of this great artist at a peak moment in his career. There are several lol moments as well, including the whole motorcycle bit and MO's wonderful flirtation with perennial muse Leonor Silveira which ends with his wife expressing her comic exasperation. For me, too, I have to say that what made it a special privilege was seeing doc footage from the set of Valley of Abraham, mainly because that film in particular is so rigorously framed and composed. To witness its star and the environment she inhabits rendered with a more relaxed, casual eloquence was a greatly appreciated opportunity and experience.
