Have you tried to acquire Zigeunerweisen? A rather brilliant work from Immamura contemporary Seijun Suzuki that is quite in line with the aesthetic interests of some of the other films in your collection. Kind of a bridge between Assassination and the films like Kuroneko.

I don't know anything about the copyright holders, but i do know that quality prints exist of all of these films, as i was able to watch them in the past two years in different cinemas. All of these are dearly missed on DVD.

... and i just realized it was released on VHS in 1999 by the bfi, so it's likely that it gets hold of the rights for a DVD edition easier.
(after their release of People on Sunday i wouldn't be to surprised)

But if the rights are still to get, i would recommend the MoC to try and get it.
It's worth it.

No kidding! The Geneon transfer of this in R2 Japan is pretty decent, though maybe a bit of high contrast. I love this film, though I haven't seen it with subtitles, luckily Keiko McDonald and Desser each give fairly detailed synopsis. This would be ideal for a multiple version release, as there's a 165min version (that most have seen) and a 216min version which puts back in all the scenes that were excised due to an intervention on the part of Osugi's surviving mistress Kamichike Ichiko.

It's just a matter of time before Yoshida is more lavishly exposed in the west. With his similarities to Antonioni, Mizoguchi, and Bergman (with many relatively unique qualities as well) I can see people connecting strongly. I would love to see MoC release some of his films, but I can imagine them going down more brightly lit paths first.

I would love to see the Terayama as well, I've only seen an unsubtitled DVD of this, and it confused the hell out of me. Subtitles are a must for this one, I think.

Clueless about the rest, but I'll look into them if you're listing them alongside the two I've seen. Thanks.

Any chance MoC can/will release Tarkovsky's NOSTALGHIA?

While it would be welcome, it seems unlikely given that it's already distributed in the UK by Artificial Eye.

At this year's EIFF there's to be a Michael Powell retrospective. Included are prints of' Contraband 'and a' Spy in Black'. A MoC double bill would follow along very nicely thank you.

Not quite "random", but close, Humanity and Paper Balloons lists "Jean Renoir" as an MoC director in the inside flap. There are many Renoir films already available in R2... it'll probably be Toni, or The Lower Depths.

I would *love* to see a DVD of Picnic in the Grass though. Great bizarre film, and my *horrible* VHS is getting pretty worn.

Could it be that The Great Silence (Il Grande Silenzio) will get a DVD release through MOC? A filmcompany called CULT! will release it (in the UK in December) and they have also released Punishment Park and will release Vengeance Is Mine in September.

Corbucci's THE GREAT SILENCE is already out on Eureka DVD. It will not be re-released in the MoC Series.

With Kino in the USA releasing DVDs of The Blue Bird and Lorna Doone in September (they have a small blurb on their website, apparently barebones discs), would it be impossible for MoC to release Maurice Tourneur's film La Main Enchantée (aka Carnival of Sinners, AKA The Devil's Hand)?

I've understood this to be one of the best films made during the occupation of France...a horror film starring Pierre Fresnay, no less, and directed by one of the pioneers of cinema.

I saw it about 20 years ago (i.e. as a teenager), late at night on French TV, and I remember it being a very dark and powerful film and I can't wait to see it again. Is it as dark and tragic as I remember it?

Only read about it, and eager to see, as with all the more elusive Renoir... It is thought to be a precursor of Neo-Realism, location shooting and non professional actors etc., and indeed Visconti worked as assistant on it....
