All-Region DVD and Blu-ray Player Advice

You should be able to switch regions with your remote. My manual says:

"For RCE DVD's please change with the remote, by pressing 12345 or 6 corresponding to the RCE DVD region."

Got the Insignia player shipped over, received it this morning. Nice to see the display come up:



But as another surprise, the seller included a DVD in the player (or forgot to take it out...)



Oh well.... Hell Freezes Over....

So far testing it out, one thing that's bothering me, is if I change the DVD region code to region zero, I can't just stick in any DVD. If the DVD itself is region zero, there is no problem. but after entering region locked discs, they get spit out.

If I put in a region 1 disc, I must set the player to region 1. Region 2 disc, set the player to region 2, etc.

It was a lot simpler on my previous player, but it's a small complaint for the cheap price. Are all Insignia players like this?

My Seiki BD660 isn't playing several non-R1 DVD's. It seems to be a problem with Region 0 PAL DVD's such as these:

Judex (MOC)
Passenger (Second Run)
La Signora Di Tutti (MOC)
Bellissima (MOC)

I've tried changing the region coding on the player to 0, 1, 2, etc., but no luck. I just get a blank black screen. It seems like the DVD can't access the menu. Has anyone else encountered this problem and have a solution?

I had this very problem with my first Seiki. Region B BDs would play fine but any R2 DVDs wouldn't play at all. It's like the DVD would get stuck before the menu could load. I looked online and saw many people saying how happy they were that R2 DVDs played and looked great on the Seiki which left me puzzled. So, I bit the bullet and bought another one hoping my first was just a defect, which is to be expected from a $78 player. The new one plays everything, so I don't have any solutions other than to exchange yours for another if possible.

Other PAL discs play fine? Or is it just specifically those titles? If it's a PAL problem, maybe you have to go into your system menu and specify your TV as "NTSC" and not "AUTO"

I had the same problem. This is Walmart we're talking about, so there should be no problem exchanging it, even if you have to get a little creative.

Thanks, it must just be another defective player. Other PAL DVD's work fine. This is actually my second Seiki. I had to exchange the first one because it didn't play anything at all. Maybe the third time will be the charm.

Edit: Yep, third time was the charm. Exchanged the player and everything's working fine now. Thanks Seiki for making one out of three players that actually work.

OK, OK... you shamed me. I "borrowed" some money from the company (will put it back when the Tax Refund deposit comes), deposited it in the bank and bought the Naruse BFI set from amazon UK. Don't know what I'll do when it comes because, except for my laptop, I don't have a region free DVD. Oh well, three new-to-me Naruse's (all allegedly classics) for less than what I've paid for getting into NYC's Film Forum to see one movie ($12.50 ticket plus almost $10 for small popcorn & soda) can't be beat. I'm new to Naruse (just saw "Repast," the mind-blowing "Flowing" and "Yearning" for the first time at Film Forum) so this $16 purchase three better be worth the trouble of going region-free.

Ooops, I just saw the post above and realize I chose 6-10 delivery for my Naruse BFI from the UK. Hope the order comes through since I've only ordered once before from overseas (a Melville movie from amazon France for a friend).

Best Buy always tends to have some good ones on sale. They aren't region free with Blu but they seem to be with DVD.

I don't know what other people's experience has been with the Insignia, but I gave up on it after going through two duds in a row. On a lot of discs I'd put in, it wouldn't play the center channel audio. It would also randomly skip to various different parts of the movie throughout playback. (The best instance of this was watching Morning Glory, when it jumped about eight times right to Diane Keaton saying "fuck.") The front panel buttons also died on my second one within a couple days. At least if you buy at Best Buy though, you have the 30 day return window.

I've had mine for two months now and no problem at all. For now I think it's a fine player even though the region-free hack has been corrected on the most recent update.

I only use it for Blus and the occassional Netflix rarity, so it hasn't gotten a lot of wear, but I too have no complaints

I have the WBRDVD2. There is a recent firmware update that gets rid of the Blu/DVD region free capability, but luckily I was warned ahead of time and I'm just not performing that update. It still works fine. This one I've only had since November, but before that I had a WBRDVD and never had a problem except that it wasn't region free. I gave my old one to the in-laws.

So my Sherwood finally became a Sherwood and no longer plays dvds, giving me the no disc message for everything I put in. Blu discs still play fine, for now, but I figure that will only last so long. I'm in the market for an actual quality all region blu player and I'm wondering what the recommendations would be at this point. I'm trying to avoid the stress of dealing with the cheap Insignia and Sherwood type players. I'm thinking of trying a modded blu player from regionfreedvd.net and I'm curious if anyone has dealt with them.

Well, since the modded players cost an arm and a leg compared to their quality, i suggest an Oppo. I have mine almost 2 years now and it works like a charm, it plays everything i throw at it.

I've thought about an Oppo, but any that I see listed as region free go for around $650-700 which is way too steep. I'd prefer spending no more than $350-400 if possible, but I don't know if that's possible for a quality all region player. Also, are the Oppo players manufactured region free or are those prices for modded machines as well?

The Oppos can be firmware modded, but if you buy the hardware mod is going to cost you $80 approximately. If i were you i would be on the lookout for a used Oppo on Ebay and then you can apply the chip on your own, it's quite easy.
