They confirmed a Vigo set a year ago on Facebook.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vo
The helm of the ship looks more like a television set placed on top of the boat. (I'd say it's something different altogether if it weren't for the ships wheel- but that box really doesn't seem connected). Without the helm, the ship would then resemble the L'Atlante boat.
In other clue cryptograms, could the knife + coffee be related to Fear and Loathing? Didn't Gonzo have a huge knife come with room service? It's been too long since I've last seen it.
Criterion Cast gives the following as possibilities to the Coffee & Knife:

If they don't include the Lucy episode as an extra on here, boy, I dunno....Jeff wrote:Could be Silvana Mangano in Bitter Rice, a Janus property.

I really don't see any way that it's not White Material. The movie could have reasonably been titled Coffee & Machetes.Minkin wrote:Criterion Cast gives the following as possibilities to the Coffee & Knife...

This thread made me realize we don't have a thread for White Material. I guess no one wanted to start the apologetic tone for the movie not being 35 Shots of Rum.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vo
Yeah. It's a beautiful film, and Huppert is great, but there is an hour in the middle of the film that's especially meandering and oblique. I disengaged for whatever reason, and ended up admiring more than liking it. I know I'm in the minority there, and it will certainly find fans when it enters the collection.knives wrote:This thread made me realize we don't have a thread for White Material. I didn't even have that as a problem. I thought the entire climax and how it snuck(really firefox, that's not a word) up on me was excellently handled and could have gone for an other half hour, but for all of the complexity and the high stakes involved with the film there was never any moment that was as exciting and personally touching as nearly every one in 35 Shots of Rum. This is a film that more or less ends in an orgy of violence that still can't top the diner scene of 35 Shots. It's a good movie, just not good enough for my expectations.

I haven't seen White Material, but I'm sure her true fans will be forgiving if it's a slight drop in quality after 35 rhums - mostly because they were conceived at nearly the same time, but also because the latter is an intensely personal film that would probably be difficult for any director to follow up.knives wrote:This thread made me realize we don't have a thread for White Material. i watched the artificial eye bluray of this, which is a wonderful transfer, if meager with supplements, waiting for an explaination as to why agnes godard was not denis's cinematographer. was fooled, because i was sure godard was behind the camera. another breakup, like wong kar- wai, or ... ?

Most compelling claim I've heard for the coffee/knife. From Pyoko at blu-ray.com:
I was hoping for Glengarry Glen Ross. ("Coffee's for closers only.", "Second prize is a set of steak knives.")

Glengarry Glen Ross would be a fantastic addition to the collection and though not directed by Mamet, it'd complement his CC entries quite nicely. So, yes, swo's plea is seconded. Someone else can pick up White Material (would much rather have a Blu of 35 Shots of Rum but someone else has the rights. CinemaGuild I think?)

I'd love for this to happen, but that's not very compelling.ShellOilJunior wrote:Most compelling claim I've heard for the coffee/knife. From Pyoko at blu-ray.com:

I don't think that's at all clear, especially since since if that's a foot and a half long machete it must be one hell of a big can of coffee.

While I'd love to be wrong, this seems like a stretch. Coffee is more or less incidental to that speech in the film. The money line is "First prize is a Cadillac, second prize is a set of steak knives, third prize is you're fired."I was hoping for Glengarry Glen Ross. ("Coffee's for closers only.", "Second prize is a set of steak knives.")

Get them to plant on the slant that is growing!
What about the part where Baldwin tells Ed Harris he should go work on an African coffee plantation?

you know, you're right. There's also the scene in the kitchen where that lady threatens Jack Lemmon with a machete. totally forgot about that.domino harvey wrote:What about the part where Baldwin tells Ed Harris he should go work on an African coffee plantation?

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vo
It's possible that the calendar clue is referring to the long-awaited release of People on Sunday instead of Sunday Bloody Sunday. Criterion's got the rights to both, so I guess it doesn't much matter. I would have preferred an ice cream sundae drenched in red "chocolate" sauce if it were a reference to the Schlesinger film, and I am definitely looking forward to People on Sunday more.
If it is a reference to People on Sunday, that leaves le cercle rouge around the date, which is hopefully another clue altogether...

Why else would it be circled in red, when nothing else is in color? Unless the red is supposed to make you think of blood.

Isn't Cercle Rouge Lionsgate/Studio Canal or has it slipped the net?

It's a StudioCanal film, but Criterion's license is still active. It hasn't gone out of print yet.Zazou dans le Metro wrote:Isn't Cercle Rouge Lionsgate/Studio Canal or has it slipped the net?

OK Thanks Admittedly the circle as drawn is identical to the one in the title sequence so it looks like a safe bet.

I agree. It is likely that similar to Breathless, the Cercle Rouge license is through Rialto, not StudioCanal.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vo
Like Breathless and unlike The Third Man, StudioCanal recently released this onto Blu in Europe but not in North America, perhaps evidence that Criterion still has the rights. I'd be curious to see how they correct the colors.
On a side note, is anyone else afraid to buy older Criterion DVDs for fear they might appear on Blu? Are there certain DVDs that Criterion are less likely to release onto Blu? Sorry if this question has been asked before.
