the scene that interested me the most is the one where jeffrey and dorothy are on the rooftop of her apartment building and dorothy drops her red shoes over the ledge. im predisposed to assume or at least hope that the missing scenes at least approach the level of quality of the existing film, because it is Blue Velvet after all. i thought the scenes were removed because of Lynch's contractual obligations to De Laurentiis to bring in a two-hour movie

Yes, Lynch was obligated to a 2-hour running time if he was to maintain "final cut", but I seriously doubt he would have issued a 4-hour version if he had a choice in the matter. I imagine if he had complete freedom he might have extended the running time another 20 to 25 minutes, but I've never heard him complain about being dissatisfied with the released version. He shot a lot of material for FIRE WALK WITH ME as well, but realized that many of the subplots involving familiar TWIN PEAKS characters just didn't fit in the film as he ultimately envisioned it. The good news is that all the extra FWWM footage exists (although who knows if it will ever be released) whereas the BLUE VELVET footage is lost.

There are one or two additional scenes with Laura and Leland in the script that were shot (confirmed by Grace Zabriskie) and it would be nice to see those at least reinserted but Roger is right that pretty much all the other scenes with Peaks regulars don't really belong in the film as such.

Scene 72: Palmer house entrance.

Laura runs down the steps nearly colliding with her mom, Sarah Palmer, coming down with a load of groceries. A cigarette in her mouth.

SARAH:
Laura, honey …

(smoke getting into her tearing eyes)

Cigarette … cigarette …

Laura takes it out of her mouth.

LAURA:
Can I take the car?

SARAH:
Sure honey, what’s the hurry?

LAURA:
I forgot my books at school.

Laura runs from the house.

SARAH:
Laura.

LAURA:
What?

Laura looks back to see her mom dangling the car keys in front of her. Laura comes back to get the keys, still holding the burning cigarette. Sarah sternly takes the cigarette from Laura’s hand. As they make the exchange:

SARAH:
You’ll never be a smoker if you don’t start. I mean it.

Takes a drag. With barely a nod, Laura is gone.

Not a huge scene by any means but I always felt Grace Zabriskie didn't get enough screentime in the finished film. Next excerpt is a scene following on from Laura's visit to Harold Smith:

Scene 78: Palmer dining room

Laura rushes in to find her mom setting the table. Sarah stops and stares at Laura.

SARAH:
You lied to me about those school books. I found them upstairs on your bed.

LAURA (suspicion and paranoia):
What were you doing in my room?

SARAH:
I was looking for that blue sweater that you borrowed which I found balled up in the bottom of your closet. Now why did you lie to me? Where did you go?

LAURA:
I had to see Bobby. I know you really don’t like Bobby, but there was a problem and I didn’t think you would understand.

SARAH:
Oh, honey, you don’t have to lie to me. Ever. You can tell me anything. I’ll understand.

LAURA:
I’m sorry, Mom.

SARAH:
Now hurry, dinner’s almost ready. Your father says he’s starving.

Scene 79: Palmer dining room

Laura is already at the table. Sarah puts the rest of the dinner on the table and sits down just as Leland enters from the kitchen. He is pretending he is a giant. Using a voice like a giant.LELAND (big giant voice):
Hello, Laura. Hello, Sarah. Where’s my axe?

(singing) “I’m hungry.”

SARAH:
Oh, Leland.

LAURA (embarrassed):
Dad.

LELAND (suddenly speaking Norwegian):
Hyggelig ĺ mřte dem. Jeg Heter Leland Palmer.

Translation is: How are you? My name is Leland Palmer.

Laura and Sarah stare at him.

LELAND:
The Norwegians are coming next week and I want you to learn to say what I just learned in Norwegian. So you can talk to them. I want you to learn to say, “Hello, my name is Leland Palmer.”

LAURA:
But my name isn’t Leland Palmer.

SARAH:
Neither is mine. And can’t we talk about something serious for a change?

LELAND:
This is serious. Mr. Benjamin Horne’s got a delegation of Norwegians coming in next week and I want both of you to learn to introduce yourself. Sarah, you first.

Leland repeats his phrase for Sarah’s benefit.

LELAND:
Hyggelig ĺ mřte dem. Jeg Heter Leland Palmer.

Sarah stumbles through it.

SARAH:
Hyggelig ĺ mřte dem. Jeg Heter Sarah Palmer.

Leland repeats his phrase back to her. Extends his hand in a friendly handshake.

LELAND:
Good. We’ll practice some more. Laura, now you try it.

Laughingly, Laura does the same thing.

LAURA:
Hyggelig ĺ mřte dem. Jeg Heter Laura Palmer.

After Laura is done.

LELAND:
All together now …

Leland extends a hand to each of them. An air of insanity seems to come over the Palmer dining room as they all begin to laugh hysterically and talk in broken Norwegian.

Note that Grace Zabriskie describes this scene as the laughter starting to be warm and gradually builds into a scene of complete over the top hysteria. In speaking with Grace, she has told me that of all the scenes that she filmed for Twin Peaks, this was her most treasured and she hopes to be able to see this scene someday. Also to note, the phrase "Hyggelig ĺ mřte dem" is more precicely translated as "nice to meet you" rather than "how are you" as noted in the script.]

Another scene involving Mrs Palmer I found quite intriguing:

Scene 118: The stairway.

The fan turns slowly as Laura goes up the stairs.

BOB’S VOICE: Laura.

Laura’s head snaps around.

LAURA:
No … No, go away.

BOB’S VOICE:
I’m glad you let me talk to you. You used to not let me talk to you.

LAURA:
Go away. I am not talking to you.

BOB’S VOICE:
I want you.

Sarah Palmer is at the bottom of the stairs.

SARAH:
Laura?

Laura jumps.

SARAH:
Laura, now I can’t find that blue sweater. Did you take it again?

Mom … what are you wearing?

Sarah looks down. She is wearing the sweater that she is looking for.

SARAH:
My god, I am going to have another breakdown. God, god.

LAURA:
Mom, take it easy.

Laura starts down the stairs towards her mother.

SARAH:
No, no … this can’t be happening.

Laura holds her mother.

LAURA:
Mom, you’re not having a nervous breakdown.

Sarah pulls away from Laura and wanders into the living room. Laura watches her go, feeling helpless.

Thanks, Finch. I'll have to research this further. I can see why the scene with Leland speaking Norwegian got cut, but you're right that Grace Zabriskie didn't get enough screen time. I've seen the movie enough times to imagine these scenes in my mind, but it'd still be nice to have a look at them. Very interesting work here indeed.

What's MK2's reputation when it comes to Blu-ray quality? That's such exciting news.

Couldn't say mfunk but I wanted to clarify where I got the news from: pro-bassoonist posted the announcement on another forum. What I'm most intrigued about is how their Blu of Lost Highway handles the handful of pitch-black sequences in Fred's apartment, and whether the FWWM Blu will include the deleted scenes. Chances are both will be region B only.

PS.: It's a preliminary announcement and as such the release date is subject to change. I think MK2 are also prepping the Three Colours Trilogy for Blu.

Dugpa reckons that the upcoming FWWM Blu is almost certainly going to be a barebones release. He says in this piece that MK2 are sitting on over 20 hours of interview footage for FWWM that they hired him to shoot between 2004 and 2005. If you want to see this stuff, follow dugpa's link at the bottom of the page to contact MK2 as this may be the last ever chance to see the deleted scenes and specifically commissioned documentary World of Blue.

Artificial Eye's MK2-sourced The Double Life of Veronique is an outstanding disc - though since MK2 made the film in the first place, and the company is currently run by the son of the film's original producer, that's not too surprising.

I'm summing up here, but the above posted audio interview with Lynch reveals that the upcoming Blu release of Blue Velvet will include deleted scenes and outtakes that have recently re-surfaced. According to Lynch, those materials were deemed lost after Laurentiis's company went bankrupt, but they've been found somewhere in Seattle. Rejoice!

Holy Cow - the excised footage has been found?! Of course, this is no guarantee that any of the footage will end up on a Blu-ray edition (per every issue of FIRE WALK WITH ME), but it's great to hear the material wasn't trashed and Lynch certainly sounds excited by the rediscovery.
