I would much rather have La Luna. Fox didn't even put that one out on DVD. Maybe they grabbed both.

Delicatessen would make a lot of sense.

Nah. City of Lost Children is certainly a possibility, but Delicatessen was just released on Blu-ray under the StudioCanal Collection banner.

Criterion hasn't Jumpedtheshark and probably never will, but once in awhile they like to slap on some water skis and head in the shark's direction.

I take it you're one of those purists that doesn't consider The Darjeeling Limited to be a Satyajit Ray film.

Well, it's a lot more than silly, so maybe you should see it again
It is quite silly, but only in part, and it is quite a bit more as well: Annette Benning, in the same year as AMERICAN BEAUTY, and giving the braver and more riveting performance for Jordan; Downey back when he could do little wrong, (ah, those were the days); and if you lop off the grotesque (studio imposed one is to hope?), Brian DePalma-cribbed coda, you're left with a beautiful and haunting (but still, decidedly loopy) film.

And what's wrong with another Liv Tyler? ONEGIN anyone? Better she than Madonna via SWEET & STICKY (oh! vomit), which Khondji, apparently, also shot - poor guy.

I remember the hostile reviews when Stealing Beauty came out; the harshest verdict probably was from the critic who opined that Stealing Beauty was "an embarassing film from an embarrassing director". I don't recall the name of the reviewer or the newspaper the review appeared in but the consensus certainly appeared to be that Bertolucci was well past his prime by then. If this film is confirmed, I imagine it won't be so much "why Liv Tyler instead of Ray?" cries but "why Stealing Beauty rather than a stacked DVD & Blu of The Conformist?" (Paramount's 2006 disc is good but a bit light on bonus features, and the film would look swell in 1080p if done right).

So nobody else thinks that Zidane, a 21st Century Portrait is a possibility then?

The House Next Door has a great interview with Kent Jones about the World Cinema Foundation, definitely worth a read. This stood out:
KJ: Our films screen regularly around the world, at festivals and cinematheques, art houses and assorted cultural institutions. We are working with Criterion on a box set.

Does this mean we will soon see F&A on Blu? (Amazon also has a coming soon link up)

Sweet Smell of Success is also there, on the blu.com site, and that has practically been announced.

This must be the first time A Brighter Summer Day has been referred to as 'legendary' and, moreover, juxtaposed with 'obscure'.

Did not know about the SC blu of Delicatessen....will have to check that out.

I agree City of Lost Children is probably the odds on pick then....which wouldn't suck.

Not that Mulvaney can be trusted but he replied to an email I sent him today stating that it is not City of Lost Children.

I really do think it's Stealing Beauty unfortunately.

I'm probably completely wrong, but I have a feeling that the Essential Arthouse line has been discontinued so that Criterion can focus their efforts on a new (hopefully) line devoted to the World Cinema Foundation titles. Hopefully, the only thing this theoretical line would have in common with Essential Arthouse is a choice between individual purchases and discounted box sets.

I wouldn't object if they kept the MSRP.

Blu-ray announcements for some crap I'll never buy over again, please! No, wait -- actually, let me second the Gorin, Deep End, and WCF line ideas. And throw in a Taking Off Blu, just to make it completely unrealistic.

Criterion said on FB titles will be announced on Monday. I'd say

A Brighter Summer's Day (DVD + Blu)
Sweet Smell of Success (DVD + Blu)
The 39 Steps (Blu)
Still Walking (DVD + Blu)
