Looks kinda like a sanitized Showgirls, free of anything that made it an incidentally entertaining film. Seems like any other non-actor's make-me-a-picture-star vehicle: broad strokes, obvious dialogue, one or two veterans to legitimize the project, etc. I can't claim to closely follow the career trajectory of Aguilera, but didn't her last record tank? Who ponied up the scratch for this?

Re: Trailers for Upcoming Films
I'm hoping that Sucker Punch turns out to be about a Spice Girls/All Saints style manufactured pop band who are waning in popularity until they find out Matrix-style that their entire world, not just their careers, is a delusion and they can therefore do anything to restore their fame by fighting off Nazis (appealing to the granddad demographic), dragons (to capture the hearts of the kids and young teen boys), all while in skimpy clothing (to grab the attention of all the men in the audience). All of which is interspersed with backstage bitching between the group while changing costumes, and with everything climaxed by a huge stadium rock number, containing lots and lots of fireworks and squealing guitar solos.
I'm sure I'd be even more excited about this if it were a Japanese film featuring a bunch of idol singers, with the promise of extremely over the top levels of carnage. But even without those elements it could still be undemanding eye candy.
And here's the trailer for Red, which looks a bit like an elderly version of that new A-Team film. I'm mostly interested for the scenes of Helen Mirren firing an enormous gun (which would definitely have livened up The Queen!), but John Malkovich doing another wacky turn and the brief but promising tease of Richard Dreyfuss being mercilessly beaten also captured my interest.

Borgnine is what has me curious in this project. 100 year old action hero, what more needs to be said?colinr0380 wrote: And here's the trailer for Red. Saw a trailer for The Disappearance of Alice Creed before Winter's Bone on Saturday and it's opening at the local art house venue this week...the trailer was pretty damned intriguing, and i'm wondering if any of our UK friends have any opinions of it? Is it as ingenious as the trailer and the glowing reviews and summaries i've seen suggest? I've really liked Eddie Marsan over the years and am excited at the prospect of a British thriller not made by Guy Ritchie or someone wishing he was Guy Ritchie trying to fit as many cuts into every scene as possible.

Teal and orange. It's disgusting. Is there some sort of secret law enforcing this color scheme upon pain of death?Every single goddamned movie made by a studio in the past 5 years

It's apparently an eye-catching and eye-pleasing combination, part of graphic design theory I think (I'm no designer). You're right, though, it's on everything.FerdinandGriffon wrote:Teal and orange. It's disgusting. Is there some sort of secret law enforcing this color scheme upon pain of death?

This movie should've been called "How God punished James Franco for starring in Pineapple Express."Dadapass wrote:127 Hours (Danny Boyle, 2010)

You mean the funny and original comedy that was critically praised and netted him a Golden Globe nomination?

Yeah, I don't get this Pineapple Express backlash that's suddenly been popping up. I saw it on Criterion's Facebook page, too, in the responses to a post about David Gordon Green.

Trailer for Takashi Miike's 13 Assassins. The film is screening at TIFF and doesn't have distribution in North America. I hope IFC picks it up! I'm not really a Miike fan but this looks excellent!

So, just went to see AW,aGaaNS at the Sunshine (It was very good, an improvement on the original, in my opinion), and noticed that the obvious digital color manipulation in the trailer was nowhere to be seen in the actual film. In fact, Zhang uses color beautifully and intelligently throughout.FerdinandGriffon wrote:Teal and orange. It's disgusting. This tampering would seem to indicate that American studios think their audiences crave this nauseating color combo so strongly that we won't get near anything that hasn't already been steeped in Powerade and Mango Lassi. Disgusting.

I had forgotten this was a remake of Blood Simple. I didn't really have that problem after watching the trailer.
