I'm sure you guys are right. Maybe it was just more noticeable to me because of the lack of Eclipse and EAH titles. Carry on.

When's the last time they did a new EAH? I feel like maybe they're phasing those out...

Here's the release schedule for the EAH box sets. It's definitely slowing down, for whatever reason, but they never seemed to show up at regular intervals.

Volume 2: February 10, 2009
Volume 3: June 16, 2009
Volume 4: September 15, 2009

Volume 2: February 10, 2009
Volume 3: June 16, 2009

Like Matt, I'm pleased to see all of the DVDs priced on the lower tier - especially the Kubrick and Bergman. I may just blind buy all of them.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vo
The Bergman is one I'll probably pick up expressly because of the low price point- I don't know if it's a movie I'd normally be hugely interested in, but with the B&N deal it's not really any more than a used dvd at the record store. Might be the last time I choose DVD over blu-ray, too.Jean-Luc Garbo wrote:Like Matt, I'm pleased to see all of the DVDs priced on the lower tier - especially the Kubrick and Bergman. Yeah, the B&N deal won't work with that title as it's being released outside the sale window. Next year, I guess?

The lower tier prices also mean that any of us with birthdays during this season won't have to feel guilty asking loved ones for these DVDs as gifts (or Xmas presents). They might even pick up two of them! That's awfully mercenary of me to say it, but sometimes Criterion isn't the best item to request as a present (thank heaven for loving parents and companions, though!) I should add that it's a relief to me as well because House is the gift to make to friends who wouldn't see it (but would still love it) at all had not Criterion released it. I didn't notice that Magician was $25 MSRP so I might cheat a little and get myself an early birthday present.

wouldn't they have just saved Paths to release them simultaneously if they had The Killing too?THX1378 wrote:I was going to say the same thing that The Killing can't be far behind now that Paths announced. Don't know enough about "The Magician" to make a call, I don't get Wes Anderson outside of "Rushmore" (so no "Darjeeling Limited" for me) and I'm perfectly content with my "Seven Samurai" three-disc DVD. Good month even though there's no Eclipse Box Set announcement.

They have already fessed up to having The Killing on Facebook. "We hope to make a Killing on some Kubrick next year," or something to that effect. I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see it paired as a sequential spine with Killer's Kiss sometime in 2011.

It would have to be a two for one deal. Killer's Kiss is a Kubrick curiosity, and I'm not sure how many people would hand over cash for a standalone issue.Jeff wrote:They have already fessed up to having The Killing on Facebook. That's where you're wrong. With STANLEY KUBRICK across the front cover, they'll sell more on their first days than Hopscotch and Border Radio have sold in their entire runs... combined.

Perhaps. I can't see it being given a standalone release, though. More of a jam-packed two-fer a-la the Killers. It ain't much of a film, in my humble opinion. The Killing is top-tier, though. Great film.mfunk9786 wrote:That's where you're wrong. Maybe a five pack of the Killing, Killer's Kiss, the Killers 1946, the Killers 1964, and Kill!

Louie Bluie, Patriotism, Night and Fog; they have a habit with these smaller films though KK isn't nearly as good.

I've had Ace in the Hole in my hot little hands 3 time in the last 3 days at Barnes & Noble, but keep putting it back due to a persistent sense that this was confirmed or at least rumored to be in the blu queue...am I imagining that? Have they given any hints on the possibility of an upgrade on this? It's a truly wonderful film, and my favorite Wilder, so i'm anxious to finally get it....

It goes instance, fluke, lark, month of Sundays, couple-a-bunch, habit, problem.HistoryProf wrote:Most Dangerous Game & Simon of the Desert....is 5 a habit?
Re: Ace in the Hole, I don't remember anything--could be wrong--but they've stuck mostly to the first hundred or so spine numbers, with the exception of a few cannon giants and music- and technophile-related films; a couple they knew were going out of print shortly and wouldn't get another chance at; and Becker's pet project, The Last Emperor. So you should be safe in picking it up.

I don't want to accidentally steer you wrong, but with the Sternbergs they mentioned that they didn't have blu ray rights - I doubt they secured blu ray rights when they licensed Ace, so I wouldn't expect to see a Blu of that anytime soon, because those rights would likely be a separate negotiation pain in the ass for our Criterion friends.
Whereas I would now expect to see all the MGM films on blu, because that appears to be part of the deal.

In my experience, I know many people outside of our sphere who have never heard of The Killing and know little from this Stanley Kubrick guy, but have heard of Paths of Glory and Dr. Strangelove.tajmahal wrote:Perhaps.
