But is that the edition eltopo talks about? In the picture he posted, the cover is different, and there are 2 discs, while your links mentions only 1 DVD...?

It's from the same distributor and a quick search at Merlin reveals that only an old disc from 2000 exists for this film. So, unless the 2-DVD edition went OOP, we are talking about the same DVD here.

I don't think it's the same DVD - I checked the Gazeta Wyborcza page (I assume they're the disc's co-producer), and they mention you can buy the reconstructed DVD from their e-shop here (it seems they do ship internationally) - only the 1st part's available at the moment. I guess it'll take some time before the other stores start carrying this...

That DVD is a single-disc release. It has English subtitles but it's not in the correct aspect ratio of 2.35:1.

Well, I did not actually try ordering the DVD from them (I'll wait until they have both parts in stock), but I just checked out their registration dialog (Zakładanie konta) - the country (Kraj), set to Poland (POLSKA) by default, can be changed by clicking the change country (zmień kraj) link. Did you try that? Or are you talking about some other dialog?

No, there's no list, but it accepted Czechy (Czech Republic in Polish), and I was able to register. I then tried to purchase the DVD, got to the step where I could select payment by credit card and one of two shipping options (I think it was 7,50 zł for economy and 13,00 zł for priority - the 30 zł you mentioned seems to be an extra fee for special / archival magazine editions), but I didn't confirm the order...

EDIT: Oh, but now I see this DVD 'Nie ma możliwości dostawy płyt poza granice Polski' - cannot be shipped outside Poland. Sheesh...

Has anyone used this site before? It's the most English friendly Polish site I've seen (not that ordering from Merlin was difficult).

I've just placed an order with punkt44 today for the 'Ashes And Diamonds' Blu-ray, so I'll see how they perform. I'm in the UK, and the shipping cost is 15 zl, which equates to just over £3 - not too bad. At least they have an English language option on their site, which makes things a lot easier.

Hmmm, interesting - unfortunately, the seller accepts bank transfer only = an intl. transfer fee of at least 500 CZK (~$25) in my bank.

Anybody interested in a copy (the seller offers 5)? We'd share the costs...

Wow, I have a lot to catch up on here!

I love Polish films and have been devoting a lot of my free time watching and reviewing them for the last 8+ years. I have been running out of films to watch so I crept into the UK made Polish film market and now have begun the Polish made Polish film market! I am sure I will enjoy exchanging information with those who have good leads on those with subtitles (although I am almost fluent enough that I dont need them anymore thanks to all the words I have learned watching Polish movies)!

Just an update: the Ashes And Diamonds BD arrived today from punkt44, well packaged and only six days from the order date, so I can recommend this site.

It's also a very good transfer - I would say it's slightly superior to the Criterion DVD and with stronger audio, although of course it doesn't have any extras.

Has anyone heard anything about remastering projects (Blu-ray) for the historical costume epics "Gniadzo", "Casimir the Great", or "With an Iron Hand"? I have grainy and washed out/worn out VHSs of each and would really love to see them cleaned up and re-subtitled. For that matter, you could also throw in "Boleslaw Smialy" and "The Deluge". And while I'm on the subject of historical Polish films, has anyone heard any rumors about making a film about "Boleslaw the Brave", or "Boleslaw Krzywousty"? These 2 men seem conspicuously missing in the 'History of Poland' narrative on film, which seems odd, given their tremendous influence in shaping early Poland. Finally, are rumors of a film being made about the 1683 Siege of Vienna, featuring Jan Sobieski and the Polish Hussar cavalry just rumors? Has it been cast?

Thanks for the link to the Harvey Keitel as Jan Sobieski press release. Keitel is a compelling actor, so let's hope for the best. As for the "Victoria" link, it seems like I've been hearing the same news about this project for 3 or 4 years now...or rather, no new news since the initial news 3 or 4 years ago, so I'm curious, though skeptical, even though they seemingly have a completed screenplay. Perhaps Turkey's bid for EU membership has made the Victoria project impolitic at the moment?
On a side note, any idea how to get a copy of the Polish T.V. series "Kanclerz", 5 episodes, I believe, 1991, Stefan Bathory's Poland, late 1500's era? The movie, "Zelazna Reka" (1989) was so excellent, it evidently spawned a short mini-series for T.V. that I've heard about, but just can't find a copy of anywhere.
If anyone should know anything helpful, I would greatly appreciate it.

Adding to my shopping list of hard-to-find Polish movies I'd like to see are 2 by Filip Bajon; "The Magnate", and "The Spring to Come" (T.V. miniseries, or the movie version), and 1 by Lech Majewski, (a 35mm print of which I know has English subtitles) titled, "Rycerz" (the Knight), from 1980.
To round out this list I would also add "Wrota Europy" (the Gateway of Europe), an eastern front WW1-on-Polish-soil drama, and lastly, "The Story of Master Twardowski" from 1996, that I know has English subtitles. All of these are period pieces/costume dramas, and windows into the past.
If anyone has any leads on how to lay hands on any of these Polish films I would be very grateful to learn of it.
