Some random speculation and hopes
Is there any chance of Robert Wise's The Haunting? I know, the DVD was released by Warner- but it's an MGM property (unless Turner still owns it) plus its OOP and the 2003 snapper edition leaves a lot to be desired. Besides, is any studio releasing DVDs anymore?
If not that, can we at least expect most all of those MGM world Films collections to go through and expect Leningrad Cowboys (among other things)?

The Haunting is just one of the hundreds of titles from MGM pre-1986 that Turner owns. Can't see that one happening one bit.Minkin wrote:Some random speculation and hopes

And Leningrad Cowboys would be neat and MGM is just sitting on it. It's one of the several neglected Orion films they own. I wouldn't mind getting a Criterion of that film one bit.

Serie Noire is based on A Hell of a Woman, one of my favorite Thompson novels. I saw it at the Siskel Film Center in Chicago back in '04. It's actually really good. I bought a (bootleg?) copy of it here a few years back:Tribe wrote:Peckinpah's The Getaway is only interesting because of Peckinpah's involvement, but I remember it being a fairly uninteresting Steve McQueen/Ali McGraw vehicle. On the other hand, After Dark My Sweet is so far the best portrayal of Jim Thompson's literary noir vision...and on any given day it could well be The Grifters.MyNameCriterionForum wrote:>After Dark My Sweet< cough coughHarmonov wrote: As I've said before, they should put this one together with Kubrick's The Killing and Paths of Glory, Alain Corneau's Serie Noire, Peckinpah's The Getaway and Frears' The Grifters for a Jim Thompson box set. Shame Coup de Torchon is out of print...
I've always been curious about Corneau's Serie Noire...the novel on which it's based is one of Thompson's more depraved ones and the movie itself has a cult following...but I've never seen it.

The transfer is terrible, but it was nice to revisit the film.

I wouldn't mind seeing a decent copy of Street Fighter. The Chiba one not the Van Damme one.

The Round-Up (1966)
The Red & The White (1967)
Silence & Cry (1967)
Winter Wind (1969)
The Confrontation (1969)

If an eclipse is all you want you can take off the first two. I'm more curious about his new films though.ShowsOn wrote:My absolute #1 Criterion want is a Miklós Jancsó 1960s Eclipse set, including:

And the third is available with English subs from Clavis is France. Jansco's recent work is apparently quite different and much more mainstream, but he was still doing weird and wonderful stuff in the 80s, at least. I'd love to see a decent quality release of Jesus Christ's Horoscope, which brings his prowling aesthetic right up to date by incorporating spying video screens (showing different views of on- or off-screen action) into the mise en scene.knives wrote:If an eclipse is all you want you can take off the first two. DL's aspect ratio is 2:35:1, though.

Too true! I took a brief glance at the brightly colored clothes and assumed.

Yeah, that's what I thought at first too, but then noticed the aspect ratio.med wrote:Too true! I took a brief glance at the brightly colored clothes and assumed.
This one is a mystery to me. I'd guess a doc, but I really have no clue.

Whatever it is, it's still in the process of being edited since that's Final Cut Pro they're running. So I'm guessing bonus features on something - I wouldn't put much stock in figuring this out based on aspect ratio.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vo
Could it be Moolaadé? I haven't seen it in a few years, but I do recall that everyone was wrapped in very vivid colors.... Wasn't there recently something on the facebook page about Sembene's translator being in the offices, too?
EDIT: Ah, nevermind, I doubt it after looking at various stills. The clothes, while vivid, are different in style than what's seen here. Also, I'm sure that building didn't appear in Moolaadé. Too bad.

It's definitely not DL, despite the sorta-similarity to a scene in that film.

Is this the first time we all have been stumped by a Criterion clue? Usually the newsletter cinemanimals get decoded within seconds..

Probably not a good guess but I'll go with IFC's Nobody Knows About Persian Cats by Bahman Ghobadi. Haven't seen the film or anything. Have no clue what's that's a still from.

A user on blu-ray.com was thinking it might be Renoir's "The River." Possibly?
