Belmondo in THE PROFESSIONAL comes to DVD 7/20 from Lionsgate

I'm surprised they are still releasing pre 1995 titles. Maybe there's still hope for Rivette's THE NUN. (I kid, no way in hell.)

It looks to me like it's only getting released as a desperate Jacques Audiard tie-in.

Does it deserve anything more? I remember it as an almost criminally bad, offensive film.

So the film's as good as it's DVD cover then?

Is there any chance that Lionsgate would have to rights to Breaking the Waves? Just wondering.

The film's U.S. distributor was October Films. October didn't have home video distribution in 1996, so they licensed it to Live Entertainment (which subsequently became Artisan, and was bought by Lionsgate). That deal should have expired three or four years ago though. That means that the rights should have reverted to the successor of October Films, Focus Features (Universal). There is some reasonable speculation that Breaking the Waves is among the Focus titles licensed to Criterion.

Seeing Breaking the Waves on Criterion would be a dream come true. I've been fascinated with Von Trier's work ever since I heard about all of the press surrounding Antichrist and I'd love to watch this.

Actually the only uncensored US release of Breaking The Waves is still the original Criterion laserdisc.

True. But it doesn't have Bowie's "Life On Mars" over the epilogue title card, which broke my heart when I saw Breaking the Waves in the theatre. I still have the LD, but would nab a DVD toot suite if the Bowie song is restored. I'm sure it's a rights issue, but I hope it would be addressed before a DVD release is put together.

Hmmm...Thanks for that info. I saw it in the theater too, but didn't remember that, what did it get replaced with?

"Your Song" - Elton John. Utterly wrecked the mood for me when I first watched it at home. I thought "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" worked great earlier in the film, but...

Replacing "It's a god-awful small affair/to the girl with the mousey hair"

with

"How wonderful life is while you're in the world"

Anyway...

Breaking the Waves is the last VHS I ever watched, 5 years ago, and I was groggy at the time. Which song would have been over the credits of the VHS in Canada?

"The Power of Love" by Celine Dion in Quebec, and "New World Man" by Rush everywhere else.

I hope that Lionsgate never loses the rights to "Young Americans" as that would pretty much ruin Dogville for me.

Am I right in assuming American Zoetrope working on Apocalypse Now means Lionsgate will be less likely to somehow muff it?

I would assume that American Zoetrope will take care of everything except manufacturing and distribution, but yeah, wise words, HarryLong.

I only own one Lionsgate Blu-ray, Requiem for a Dream, and I think it is fantastic (and very reasonably priced). I have high expectations for Apocalypse Now release but I'm still waiting for Pi...
