I e-mailed them about Michael Winterbottom's THE KILLER INSIDE ME over a month ago, and this is the reply I finally got:

"More than likely."

Not sure if that's a yes or no, but I'm excited either way!

As I've said before, they should put this one together with Kubrick's The Killing and Paths of Glory, Alain Corneau's Serie Noire, Peckinpah's The Getaway and Frears' The Grifters for a Jim Thompson box set. Shame Coup de Torchon is out of print...

-The Decline of the American Empire (current DVD has the most vile transfer I have ever seen. It would be great to have Arcand in the collection, as he did a ton of work with the NFB that would be great supplements)

Also, Paths of Glory wasn't originally a Jim Thompson work before its big screen treatment; it was a novel written by Humphrey Cobb. Still, it would be great to have it in the Criterion Collection.

So according to a compatriot of mine who went to an Agnes Varda screening at the American Cinematheque last night with a Q&A with Ms. Varda, she said that she's trying to get Criterion to put out "Mural Murals", "Lions Love", and a couple of her other films in this country and the Criterion isn't biting because they figure they're not very profitable. She says shes still trying though.

Something must have changed in the year since the Fop posted this because Criterion is the distributor listed for several of the Varda films available on Mubi, including Documenteur, Lion's Love, Oncle Yanco, and Black Panthers, all of which would make for a great "Agnes Varda in California" Eclipse set (provided they can also include Mur Murs). Everything else by Varda that they're listed as the distributor for was released in the 4 by Agnes Varda box set.

Excellent news!! Totally unexpected but massively welcome all the same - I'll take back every derogatory thing that I've said about Criterion and their Silent treatment the second these appear on the coming soon page.

Maybe silent films on blu have been selling especially well? Most of the releases I'm familiar with were sort of a big deal, so maybe Criterion wants to catch that wave a bit.

After Dark, My Sweet would be fine as well. I kind of forgot that was made into a movie.

Re: Paths of Glory - Thompson wrote dialogue for it, hence my including it. He didn't write the novel for The Killing either. Lionel White wrote it.

Correct. Neither was The Killing...which in turn was based on a novel by Lionel White. Until he died, Thompson maintained he should have received more credit for The Killing than he actually received.

I really think Beat Takeshi is overdue for some Criterion love. Specifically Sonatine and Fireworks. I also think Sabu should have a couple of titles through the wacky C most notably Blessing bell and Monday.

I finally got to see this a few months ago on MGMHD. While it certainly hews close to the spirit of Thompson's novella, and in that sense it was enjoyable...the performances seemed overly over the top and spoiled it for me.

The frustrating thing about the Takeshi Kitano films is that BCI had licensed seven of them (Violent Cop, Boiling Point, A Scene at the Sea, Getting Any?, Kids Return, Hana-bi, and Takeshis') and Marc Walkow had started working on special features for the DVDs and then, before they could be released, Navarre shut BCI down. So the rights for those films may be available (if they reverted back to the original licensees) if Criterion wants them.

Peckinpah's The Getaway is only interesting because of Peckinpah's involvement, but I remember it being a fairly uninteresting Steve McQueen/Ali McGraw vehicle. On the other hand, After Dark My Sweet is so far the best portrayal of Jim Thompson's literary noir vision...and on any given day it could well be The Grifters.

I've always been curious about Corneau's Serie Noire...the novel on which it's based is one of Thompson's more depraved ones and the movie itself has a cult following...but I've never seen it.

I don't have the bandwidth to check for the Janus or CC logos, but Cul-de-sac has been removed from the Criterion section of Hulu. Not sure if that means they've lost the rights, or... what.
