I don't know why that's a bad strategy - at least that gives the film potential to stand on its own in a market packed with movies like this.

I suspect you're not alone, hence the January release date. The Elegant Dandy Fop wrote: I'm not too hot on the way this one looks.

Re: Trailers for Upcoming Films
You're right, but I don't think Domino's point was necessarily that they shouldn't have hired Gondry in the first place, but instead that if they do hire him, they should hire him because they want the final product to look and feel like one of his films rather than anybody else's. And even if the film does bear a stronger resemblance to Gondry's other work than the trailer lets on, the studio is not allowing the film that potential to stand on its own if the advertising doesn't let people know there's something different about it.mfunk9786 wrote:I don't know why that's a bad strategy - at least that gives the film potential to stand on its own in a market packed with movies like this.
It's the sort of thing Gilliam complained about a lot during The Brothers Grimm. The Weinsteins hired him ostensibly because they liked other Terry Gilliam movies (Bob in particular was a big fan) and then tried everything they could do to keep it from being a Terry Gilliam movie, like firing Nicola Pecorini (to cite the most egregious example).

Re: Trailers for Upcoming Films
I like the choice of kid actors with interesting faces, and the fact that the movie seems to be a shot-for-shot remake (hell, even the locations and choice of lenses, etc seem to be exactly the same) - but it all brings us back to the same "why even fucking bother?" question.
This looks particularly great, and this is coming from someone who thinks these films have gotten better as they've gone along (with the exception of the abysmal waste [or folly?] of a great director that is Prisoner of Azkaban). I found the seventh book particularly grating and difficult to get through and comprehend, partially because the glue that holds these books so firmly together is the location of Hogwarts and the interactions of the students and teachers within, and without it being there for a large portion I felt the book meandered oh so much. Even more reason to be excited for the films - everything can be edited for the purposes of telling a sensical and entertaining story - the cliffs notes approach to the other films (particularly the fourth) have benefited Rowling's rambling text more than any crazed fan of the books is ever going to admit.perkizitore wrote:Deathly Hallows

The Town, Ben Affleck's second film as director, shot by Robert Elswit.
Looks great, though it doesn't seem to feature the melancholic tone that I thought Affleck conveyed so skillfully in Gone Baby Gone.

Re: Trailers for Upcoming Films
I semi-enjoyed the trailer for Story of Hurt, but other than reading that it's set in Corvallis, Oregon and involves a cult, I can't figure out what the darned movie is about. They advertise that it's based on true events. Which events, guy? Anyways, always fond of Oregon movies and this looks like it could be creepy and evocative.
