While they're at it, they should do a special edition DVD of Lang's 'Hangmen Also Die'. The current DVD is terribly weak and this is a very important Lang film that never got the care it deserved. But I know it won't happen.

The german version is from e-m-s (who filed for bankruptcy) and is now out of print. I've tried to order it several times from resellers on Amazon.de but none of them would ship outside Europe. So it's pretty much as if it didn't even exist...

I've never understood why Hangmen is so neglected- eve apart from Lang, I would think Brecht's name would be enough to get some interest.

The Kino cover art is truly awful, even for Kino.

I know it's supposed to have a little brightness boosting but the image is said to be miles above the Kino and Orbit Media.

The Kino Blu looks absolutely fabulous even on those stills from the Beaver. Not only will I get this later this year, it makes the waiting for Steamboat Bill Jr and the promised pairing of Hospitality and Sherlock all that harder.

I realize he's not exactly on the crest of pop cultural awareness, but to judge from the Criterion of Threepenny Opera- where they almost ignored the Pabst aspect in favor of Brecht- it seems as though Criterion, at least, thought there was an audience interested in his name.

Yes, I was forgetting he was a "selling point" on that release. And of all the demographics that might have heard of Brecht, the Criterion target audience would be a likely one.
(Other than 3PO I'm trying to remember the last time there was any kind of major Brecht revival in NYC... )
But then I'd venture that - aside from a few crusty old cineastes who treasure ancient German films - Pabst is an even bigger "Who...?" than Brecht or even Weill.

I once saw a performance of Brecht and Weill's The Seven Deadly Sins in Brownville, Nebraska (pop. 146) done by locals (a few of them may have been from Omaha). All the town's "best people" were there.

Back to Hangmen Also Die, I don't think we can be so sure a Kino Blu-ray of it "won't happen." I wouldn't have thought they'd release Pandora and the Flying Dutchman at this stage of the game. I don't think the film has anything like a big following.

"No tentative plans." I can only take that to mean that the plans for the blu-ray release are set in stone!

Oh, I hadn't heard that about Pandora. Still, I wonder how many it will sell just because the film doesn't have a great following. I own it on DVD and doubt I'll ever upgrade.
Shame about Hangmen, as I agree with others here that it's major Lang.

Whatever Scorsese wants, he is quite likely to get. He's done a tremendous effort for the preservation of classic films. Just stating the obvious. Pandora may not have a great following, that much is true. But when restored it must be something for the gods to behold. A brilliant restoration of brilliant images may prove sufficient to the connoisseur, but not to the masses. By the way, Criterion rarely caters to the general public's taste. That is not undesirable, in my way of thinking.

Kino is releasing the five Fantomas features in a set on Sept 21. I know, ZZZZZZ for those of us who have the Artificial Eye, BUT: Two will have David Kalat commentaries!

No, but those are two of the titles which I gather Kino omitted from their Gaumont Treasures set, compared with the original French release, Le Cinema Premier (Vol.1).

The Kalat commentaries do make this an irresistable purchase (my copy is DVDR-ed from TCM).
Now if only someone woulkd release the 1947 version - even though Simone Signoret herself proclaimned it not very good. It's the only version that isn't available from someone somewhere...

Here's a thought for Kino: Film Foundation has a restored 35mm print of Sternberg's Shanghai Gesture. This would make an ideal first JVS on BluRay. I assume rights are not a problem as there is still the Image version and the FsansFrontieres French disc (from a better print with a slightly better transfer.)

Yes to this. It's such a bizarre and wonderful film. A tantrum throwing and drug-addled Gene Tierney is enough to make a movie on its own, adding in Victur Mature as a poetic Arab, Ona Munson in yellowface, and John Huston as a begrieved captain of industry and you have a recipe for awesomeness of the highest calibre.

I would really love to see Anatahan get some kind of quality DVD or Blu release too. (the French release is pretty crummy it would appear).
