In my opinion this is a blessing; at least I prefer the underrated Human Desire to be given a native release, presumably superior to the Japanese and Spanish editions already available.

And considering the transfer for The Big Heat in the Noir Volume 1 boxset turned out to be worse than the original release, this is good news in my opinion (considering the existing In a Lonely Place disc is already rock solid AV-wise, with a few decent extras [and not too hard to come by on the cheap]).

It's a good move for me, because I already had In a Lonely Place but not Human Desire. All part of Sony's new "Please Domino Harvey Campaign"

Received a notice from the Canadian Amazon that my pre-order of American Mavericks: The New Hollywood Cinema 1968-1972 will ship on February 8. I e-mailed Sony last week about the overdue October 20 release date and they replied they don't have a new release date and to keep a watch on their website but it is not listed yet. Stay tuned...

I would not be surprised if these are the last classic Hollywood catalog releases we see from Sony. Seems as if they're gutting the home entertainment division. It sucks because it seems like Sony only just got rolling with these excellent releases, but more importantly, it sucks for those folks who worked on these releases. Best wishes to our Sony-employed members and readers.

Man, this is not a good way to start the week. Columbia/Sony was the only studio making sense lately with their DVD releases. Of course condolences to the Sony employees who post here, but God I hope this doesn't effect the forthcoming boxes.

Personally, I like both PUSHOVER and NIGHTFALL more than HUMAN DESIRE. I haven't seen BROTHERS RICO or CITY OF FEAR.

To elaborate on my earlier post:

Nightfall is an essential Noir, and essential Tourneur, and I also think it's better than Human Desire.

City in Fear is a fairly good minor noir, a real b-movie. Don't expect a lost classic like Murder by Contract or even Blast of Silence, and it's not as cool as it's premise, something that has much stronger parallels in Kiss Me Deadly and Most Dangerous Man Alive (which, if the sci-fi angle doesn't scare them off, could really deserve to be in one of these boxes), but it's an enternaining, unpretentious b-thriller.

The Brothers Rico is an interesting off-kilter crime film (wouldn't call it a noir), in the sense that until it's ending, it tries to draw the world of crime as somewhat banal, almost purposely trying to eschew any moment of violence, which stands contrast to Phil Karlson's usual tough depictions of the underworld. As such, this quality is likely to be both its main point of interest and contention. One could write the film off as dull, if it wasn't so deliberate. Sarris considered it Karlson's best. I don't agree, but I'd say it's worth watching.

Never seen Pushover.

For me, Pushover is one of the best films in the set. Its obsession with voyeurism often reminds me of Rear Window - there are many similar shots - and I find it intriguing that (according to imdb) they were premiered just two days apart.
