Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
I think carax09 has maybe hit it on the head: remember Ray's SAVAGE INNOCENTS was in the collection; the rights are with the Schulberg estate (I believe, certainly not with WB - thank cosmic glue); and there was a recent Australian disc, I believe - David Hare can confirm or correct me on this I trust.

Shohei Imamura's The Profound Desire of the Gods.domino harvey wrote:Well, what was your guess?
Edit: Oh, it seems Cold Bishop had already guessed this film on this thread before I submitted mine to Twitter. Well, if this turns out to be the film in question and I'm the winner it seems only more awkward and unfair
Oh well, guess we'll just have to wait for the film to be revealed.

Actually, I hope you did win this competition. I'd really like to see that movie, on Blu-ray would make it even better.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
The Imamura would be even better! A beautiful, haunting, and haunted, film.
This would finally prompt me to get an all-region/format blu player.
(Come to think of it, THE PROFOUND DESIRE OF THE GODS and WIND ACROSS THE EVERGLADES would make an amazing double-bill!)

God, I hope it is the Ray, no offense to the Imamura fans. And it was a Spanish disc, not Australian

It probably wouldn't be region-locked, would it?George Kaplan wrote: This would finally prompt me to get an all-region/format blu player.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
I assume you are right. But what I have right now, a Playstation 3, won't play the PAL (?) extras on my BLACK NARCISSUS disc. Ideally, I would want to upgrade to have the same de-limited options that I have with all-format DVD. Any suggestions out there? (I know there is a separate thread for such discussion, which I'll read it too.)James wrote:It probably wouldn't be region-locked, would it?George Kaplan wrote: This would finally prompt me to get an all-region/format blu player.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
I would kinda agree, and I love Imamura. The Imamura is definitely coming from Criterion eventually. Who knows when the Ray film would get the sort of treatment?domino harvey wrote:God, I hope it is the Ray, no offense to the Imamura fans. And it was a Spanish disc, not Australian
Although one could take comfort in the fact that MOC could always best the eventual Criterion. And release ...Everglades later

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
Would it have been possible to take all the directors in their collection, list their films, and then subtract all the non scope & color entries?

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
Am I correct in assuming that MoC has relations with Watchmaker Films?
Could a MoC spine of The Whole Shootin' Match be in the works?

Watchmaker released this themselves a year ago. We urge you get hold of it if you haven't already!

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
What would be the point of it becoming an MoC title when a great (3-disc) set already exists?

It's supposed to come out on blu-ray this year.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
Two ideas for future MoC releases:
An Olivier Assayas Collection. TF1 Vidéo releases a few early Assayas titles incl. shorts and interviews this spring:

A Classic J-Horror Series, basically movies directed by Nobuo Nakagawa and/or with the words YOTSUYA KAIDAN in the title. Also think there´s another Shindo horror title. Never seen any of them, just read about them in Hardy´s BFI Encyclopedia, that´s why I´m using general terms. The pertinent Greek DVDs are OOP or expensive in the secondhand market.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
A Page of Madness would be an awesome addition to the series and as far as I know there is a relatively recent restoration too, just no DVD release.
Also, I second the praise for Pál Fejös' Lonesome. A masterpiece and I hope the rights situation isn't unsolvable.

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
So does that mean that you are actively avoiding releases with decent releases in major territories, with things like F for Fake being an exception?peerpee wrote:What would be the point of it becoming an MoC title when a great (3-disc) set already exists?

THE WHOLE SHOOTIN' MATCH is being sold in the UK too. Watchmaker are based in the UK.

Well, if Watchmaker is based in the UK, I guess my suggestion was quite superfluous!

Re: MoC Wishlist & Random Speculation
What about releasing Oshima Nagisa's AI NO BOREI (Empire of Passion) on Blu-ray? It's already available in France on Blu-ray (together with AI NO CORRIDA). This would be a perfect companion to the Criterion AI NO CORRIDA since they released their "Passion" only on DVD.
