Re: Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927)
As I already said in a PM to another member, I will surely record it, but PLEASE don't flood me all with requests at this point. I very much assume this will show up on certain places on the net very quickly... and if it doesn't, I guess everyone in Europe who can get arte will try to record it and might be willing to share it with one or two of you out there. And then there will be multipliers. But I'm not sure whether it is a good idea to discuss all of this publicly at the moment, anyway. Still three months to go.

The new cut of the film will be streaming online (with French inters) live on Friday night!
Roger Ebert says so, and here's a direct link

French or German (or both) ? The article is in German, and Ebert's Twitter says German.
Edit: scratch that I missed a «twit». No mention of streaming though.

You're fucking kidding me! On the one night I have something else planned (tickets to see Caligari)! Oh well, looks like my Metropolis cherry will be saved for the new release in the near future.

Yeah, really looking forward to it. As I live in Germany I obviously can just watch Arte via satellite TV

Here's the response I got from ARTE:
Thank you for your interest in the European culture channel ARTE.
The film "Metropolis" is broadcast only on 12.02.2010 on ARTE and unfortunately will not be available online.
Should a repeat be held at a later date at ARTE, we will notify you in writing.
Sincerely,
Olivia Hanschke

No idea, afaik Arte is only available via the analog and digital ASTRA satellites which can only be received in Europe. Other than that it's only available via local cable providers in Europe. If I had a HDD/DVD recorder I'd gladly upload a copy but unfortunately I don't

Ditto. Someone PLEASE help us poor deprived Americans. We're sorry for butchering Metropolis back in '27. We've learned our lesson!
You'll have this film buff's undying gratitude if someone could make this film available...y'know, through the proper, non-file sharing channels. Because file sharing is wrong. So very, very wrong. (cough, cough)

Shall I be the spoilsport? Money and time has been spent on restoring this. It will be available on blu-ray by the end of the year, and will even be on cinema in some countries. So maybe encouraging the spreading of HD-rips isn't too friendly as it will surely reduce the income from this, and that way make future restorations less likely.

Oh I'm definitely buying any DVD or Blu-Ray release that comes out, but that's still a good eight or ten months away, if Kino stays on track. If the opportunity presents itself to view this masterpiece, I'll take it.

Gimme a break. Since when does seeing it now mean we won't buy it later? People in Europe can legally record it, so obviously the rights owners are not concerned about that hurting DVD sales there. We just want the same opportunity to see it when they do.RobertB wrote:Shall I be the spoilsport? Money and time has been spent on restoring this. Re: Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927)
This is an open forum visited daily by googlebot. I'm suggesting don't encourage spreading HD-rips. At least not on a big open forum. You and Brianruns will buy it, but a lot of people won't if it becomes a popular download. Arte is not all of Europe. It's mainly France and Germany. They are not sending it online. And they are definitively not putting it online to be downloaded. It is exiting, and thankfully we will all get the possibility to see the restored version this year.

I doubt KINO is actively monitoring this forum, and I'm not suggesting that anyone post links here. The fact is that it's being broadcast and recorded by many people, so I don't feel that we have to protect the rights owners here. That's their job, and they've decided to make it publicly available.

Re: Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927)
Forgive me, but I'm a bit confused as to how broadcasting a film on television constitutes a failure to maintain distribution rights. Does allowing someone to record something on a DVR mean that further permission is granted to take said recording and put it on the internet? Criterion, BFI, MoC, etc. produce DVDs that can be purchased and then ripped by many people, does that mean they've given up their rights in letting people watch the movies?marknyc5 wrote:I doubt KINO is actively monitoring this forum, and I'm not suggesting that anyone post links here. I see you're deeply passionate about upholding copyright laws - I'm glad the corporations have such ardent supporters!
I just want to see the damn thing and am frustrated that people in Europe can see it many months before I can.
Trust me, I'll find a copy somewhere. And I'll also buy it once it comes out.

What's the rush? It's been 82 years, can you really not wait another few months?

Re: Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927)
I didn't argue for the copyright did I? I suggested not being vocal about spreading HD-rips. From what I have seen on this forum the people who run MoC (who have the UK rights for DVD and BD) seem to be nice people. So I suggest we don't fuck up the business for them. And the answer is no, for the sake of the argument. You do not have the right to spread copies to people you don't know on internet forums. That is not personal use.david hare wrote:RobertB's copyright arguments are really pretty shaky. I assume, like Oz, the USA and the UK the legal freedom to copy for personal use from TV broadcasts is also a given in the EU.

Hehe. Give people a fileshare link and the next thing you know they'll be asking for you to make some English subs to go with the German title cards.

LOL. Will pose a little bit of a problem if someone shares a file of the French arte transmission with the burnt-in French subs, though.Knappen wrote:Hehe. Give people a fileshare link and the next thing you know they'll be asking for you to make some English subs to go with the German title cards.

Re: Metropolis (Fritz Lang, 1927)
If it is the workprint, then what is the problem with sharing it with people? Especially since most of those people are going to purchase the final cut/restoration (as I am). No one downloads the 5 1/2 hour C- quality workprint of Apocalypse Now and is done (yes, I am sure someone will cite that one person
).
On a related note, that's the beauty of the USA. The United States government will never need a SS or KGB because the majority of the American people are more than willing to do the work.marknyc5 wrote:I see you're deeply passionate about upholding copyright laws - I'm glad the corporations have such ardent supporters!
