Oops, I did know that. I've got two on my want list. I heard Trouble in Paradise was one of their worst transfers; shame, its one of my favourite films.

It's not a bad transfer, it's just that the film elements are in bad shape and there's not much that can be done about it. It's a good disc with an excellent commentary.

I think the Criterion is far too dark, at least in the night scenes. In the (very important) opening image, I can barely make out that the dog is standing with its front paws on top of the rubbish bin. I have an off-air VHS in which this is absolutely clear. No doubt Criterion did their best with what Universal supplied, but it would appear that better - certainly brighter - elements survive (unless they've been lost since the 1980s broadcast!)

Actually, that's what I heard too, so you're right, not a bad transfer, just weak elements.

If Acts of the Apostles ever works out, it will likely be part of an Eclipse release ("Rossellini's History Films: The Ancient World") with Socrates and Augustine of Hippo. Criterion already licensed the rights to the latter two as part of a package with the other Rossellini TV titles, but has been unable to determine who the proper owner to the copyright of Acts of the Apostles is. Nobody has claimed it. That's the riddle.

Ahahahaha if they did a whole new level of proper color for Ozu begins... On HD! Hm don't think they'd really tweak the colors of their Asian film on Blu.

Also Acts of the Apostles in five parts runs 341 minutes, while Socrates and Augustine of Hippo run 120 and 117 minutes respectively - I suppose the former could just fit on 2 discs (3 discs much more preferable) while the latter two would be comfortably accomodated on single discs each - once that rights issue is sorted they all would make a similar set to the first Rossellini History Films...

If they eventually revisit Tokyo Story on Blu with a new restoration (aren't the Japanese working on a resto already for some time?), they better rerelease it on DVD simultaneously - unlike 8 1/2, there is definite room for improvement on the Ozu.

so I should hold off on buying that? there's plenty of other titles on my wishlist...but that was one i was considering picking up in the B&N sale. Is it that bad?

There is a decent transfer of GOOD MORNING, far superior to the Criterion, complete with Eng subs, in Vol #3 of the Tartan Ozu sets (obviously R2 PAL) still available here...
