Oh, heck. I couldn't even tell you the title of the movie at the moment. Got a big batch of review copies & I was just doing a quick spot-check on them for playability, etc.Where is the disc from?

Re: Netflix
So I've had a couple dvds move, with no notification, from my queue, where they sat with specific release dates, to the "saved" section of the list. The two titles are Combat Shock and Island of the Fishmen, both of which are now officially released. This seems to be in line with my previous post/complaint about Netflix's (possibly deliberate?) slighting or just plain ignorance of unusual films, particularly those on smaller labels. I've requested the titles from them, but of course we have no idea if that has any influence on their purchasing shedule. I still find it flabbergasting that the largest DVD retailer in the nation can't simply buy, say, one-copy-per-state of every title from labels like Dark Sky, Subversive, Blue Underground, Code Red, etc. since they obviously make more than enough scratch from the dozens of exercise videos and made-for-TV documentaries they add to their catalog every week. This is really starting to piss me off.

Sorry, I thoought I was clear about that in earlier posts -- I have contacted them... and the abyss stares back.

Re: Netflix
So WB wants to impose a 28-day delay window for new releases at Netflix unless they agree to a more lucrative day-and-date revenue sharing agreement (they already currently have one in place). This follows the same sort of delay Fox threw down on Redbox last week. If WB wants to make it more frustrating for people to see their DVDs, they are doing a great job.

I really don't know what more WB can do to show that they don't understand. Maybe start matting and colorizing titles from their library? he says, dreading that eventuality

Techine's Les voleurs is available for instant viewing, and not on DVD. The AR's all wonky, but it's a good film.

Meet the Postal Worker Who Stole Your Netflix DVDs (From Gawker):
Wondering why that one Lost DVD never arrived? If you live in New England, blame the Netflix Nabber. Myles Weathers pinched more than 3,000 DVDs from the mail distribution center where he worked. He faces five years in prison.
Weathers will probably do more like one year, according to The Smoking Gun, although the time will be hardened by the fact that Weathers will have the least intimidating criminal record in the joint. "What are you in for?" "Mugging the shit out of a bunch of people. You?" "I stole DVDs from the mail and put them into my backpack everyday at work, until Netflix tipped off the USPS and I was busted on a surveillance video. I was caught RED HANDED. Geddit? Ha?"
A page of the plea agreement reprinted by the Smoking Gun refers to "the 3,012 recovered DVDs," implying that Weathers couldn't even fence the property he stole from the DVD mailing service, which is just as well: He faced $38,000 in restitution if he couldn't cough up the goods. Worst. Heist thriller. Ever.

PS3 to get Netflix Streaming by the End of the Year
A report just announced it.
There is a link on that page to sign up for a free disc from Netflix which will add the proper firmware, though it is rumored that the firmware might become available via update. =D>

So I assume you need the disc to watch the movies? You can't just install software?

I am confused on this issue as well. I thought the article was clear in that the disc would just deliver the firmware upgrade...then I read the user comments.cdnchris wrote:So I assume you need the disc to watch the movies? You can't just install software?
Needing the disc to run concurrently while streaming seems dumb, but if it is free and I can keep it, then I don't really care.

There's a small portion that was added on the article
So there we go!Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities, as cited by Joystiq, noted that the Blu-ray disc required for Netflix playback on the PS3 may circumvent exclusivity clauses instituted by Microsoft. "We believe that the exclusive arrangement limits Netflix's ability to appear on the 'dashboard' for the PS3 or the Wii," said Pachter.

Criterions missing from Netflix
Dusan Makavejev's WR: Mysteries of the Organism is the latest example of Criterions missing from Netflix -- no rhyme or reason as Netflix has the other four titles of his that Criterion/Eclipse have released. Anyone have an idea of the thinking or lack thereof at Netflix?

Ozu's "Floating Weeds" remake from the 50s. They only have the one from the 30s, and despite both being from the same set, you can't get the "Extra Features" disc from either entry which would be another way for them to weirdly phrase this in case of a mixup.
I had to get this from the local library.

Unless you're in a hurry, shouldn't patronising libraries - and their free materials - be your first choice, not an alternative?aox wrote:Ozu's "Floating Weeds" remake from the 50s. Re: Criterions missing from Netflix
It was my main choice for years.. I pulled hundreds of films out of the New York Public Library. But after a while, it was laboriously tedious (e.g. Queue; not ordering too much as once; late fees; only 7 days to watch a film even though I generally watch one film a night; etc...). Netflix has made my life infinitely easier. I still use the NYPL as my backup since Netflix doesn't have everything or if I know I have a long weekend at home, I'll pull a few films since I only have three-films-a-time with Netflix.MyNameCriterionForum wrote:Unless you're in a hurry, shouldn't patronising libraries - and their free materials - be your first choice, not an alternative?aox wrote:Ozu's "Floating Weeds" remake from the 50s. In other news, the DVDs for Monterey Pop and Le Bonheur have moved from my queue to "saved". They were awfully late adding Le Bonheur in the first place and now it's already unavailable.

Re: Netflix
Yeah, I just got the new Blu releases of Monterey Pop, but they were both labeled as "Short Wait." I didn't mind at all because they actually sent me them as freebie discs, but it seems odd that a new release like this would have such limited availability.

Re: Netflix
I find that the new releases I choose invariably have some degree of wait time, often for QUITE a while. Since I tend to be a quick turnaround customer, I suppose I could be pegged for this by Netflix...rumor was that they were (are?) doing this, and making new releases available without the wait to slower turnaround customers. Kind of ticks me off since I pay extra for Blu Ray access, and often have 3 BLUs at the top of the queue, which have a way of becoming "short wait" titles just as it's time to ship a new disc.swo17 wrote:Yeah, I just got the new Blu releases of Monterey Pop, but they were both labeled as "Short Wait." Re: Netflix
So I picked up one of those $99 Insignia BD/Netflix-streaming machines and was excited to find films in HD that aren't available on Blu-ray like "The Awful Truth" among many others. Unfortunately, the audio went progressively further out-of-sync as I watched. Anyone else have this problem while streaming? I watched an episode of LOST in HD and it stayed in sync the whole time, so I'm not sure if the problem is with the player or with Netflix.
Luckily they have a rather efficient system for reporting playback problems.

Re: Netflix
I think that's one of the uses of the thread, noticing things they used to carry but no longer do for no obvious reason. You observe they don't have it, we chip in that once upon a time they did, it's not like they just flat out missed it. Mystery not solved but deepened.aox wrote:Am I missing your points?
