In case anyone misses the news in the other thread, TCM confirmed today that they will be releasing REMEMBER THE NIGHT via made-to-order DVD. It'll be remastered and include some special features.

I think we should check the facebook page ourselves if we care to invest that much in what is said there. I think whoever at Criterion has been put in charge of replying on facebook says things like "More Naruse coming," when it might only amount to Criterion having secured the rights for something that might be years from release. Nothing aside from official press releases should really be taken seriously. Anything can go wrong until then; and even if we're really unlucy, after then.

Criterion confirmed pretty emphatically that they are working on more Erice (and not just more Spanish cinema), so I guess LQ will just have to find a different rainbow to crap on.

On Facebook they mentioned that they'll be releasing another Preston Sturges title. Beautiful Blonde From Bashful Bend seem the likely suspect since we have more FOX titles coming and it's never been released on dvd.

Any other Sturges that are in need of a special edition upgrade?

REMEMBER THE NIGHT desperately needs to be released by Criterion. I'm going to keep saying that. It's as wonderful as anything Sturges ever directed and far more important than THE BEAUTIFUL BLONDE FROM BASHFUL BEND (which I don't think anyone on the planet would make any great claims for). Unfortunately, souvenir recently said REMEMBER THE NIGHT might wind up in the TCM Vault Collection. Has a Universal title ever met that fate?

You're absolutely right... Rumours are fun, no need for anyone to poo-poo that. I love hearing any tidbit I can; I suppose my remark was more directed at people who were expecting others to somehow funnel the floodgate of facebook PR that Criterion unleash when they try to answer vaguely, so as not to disappoint fans.

I find I get more disappointed when I have to look forward to something like Lawrence of Arabia over a period of years, let's say, since it appeared in that blu ray advert in 2006, strongly suggesting it would be a flagpole title for the new format. That's been brutal; whereas something like M... I just hear about it coming, and I only have to wait till Feb; and its a sure thing. Man, its been brutal knowing they're working on Lawrence, Hur and a new Terminator 1, for instance, knowing it might still be two full years till release day.

So yes, i like rumours the second I hear them, but I don't actually like then waiting till they materialise/get delayed etc.

I honestly can't see BEAUTIFUL BLONDE FROM BASHFUL BEND receiving the full Criterion treatment. I could see it in an Eclipse set (LATE STURGES?), perhaps paired with THE SIN OF HAROLD DIDDLEBOCK, which is only available in murky public domain editions.

I think you might be misinterpreting their "50-50" response, Ian. If they hadn't already acquired a title for 100% certain, they wouldn't acknowledge it at all. You asked, "What are the chances of Sweet Smell of Success or Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend" making it into the collection, and they coyly replied "50-50." I believe that means one of the titles you asked about is coming and the other is not. Sweet Smell seems far more likely, especially in light of other comments on the matter. Similarly, I would say that Paths of Glory, and not The Misfits is coming.

Of all of the titles that Criterion could pick up from Fox, I don't think Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend would make their top 50. I think that the upcoming Sturges is more likely one of the titles from the Universal Sturges box. Palm Beach Story seems the most likely, but Hail the Conquering Hero, The Great McGinty, and Christmas in July are reasonable too. Palm Beach is the only one currently available outside of that box. There's even an outside shot of upgrading Paramount's Miracle of Morgan's Creek, though that seems less likely since the existing disc is decent.

Actually, from a strictly probabilistic perspective, you are both wrong. Observe:

Let X = Sweet Smell of Success and Y = Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend. There are four possible outcomes:

1. We get X and Y.
2. We get just X.
3. We get just Y.
4. We get neither X nor Y.

Criterion has said there is a 50-50 chance that we will get one OR the other. I will interpret this to be satisfied only by outcomes 2 and 3 above. Assuming we know nothing else about the likelihood of each of these titles coming, we will say that they are both equally likely, and that one's arrival is completely independent of the other's. Therefore:

P(X) + P(Y) - P(XY) = 50%.
P(X) = P(Y) => 2P(X) - P(X^2) = 50%

We can of course restructure this as:

-P(X^2) + 2P(X) - 0.5 = 0

and then solve using the quadratic equation, where a = -1, b = 2, and c = 0.5. This yields:

P(X) = P(Y) = (approximately) 29.3%, the probability of each one coming from Criterion.

Though in reality, of course, Jeff is probably right.
