As far as I know, "Goalie's anxiety at the penalty kick" is not available on DVD in any region. Who owns the rights to this one? It would be great if Criterion released this either by itself or as part of an Eclipse set.

What titles will 2010 bring for us Bergman fans, I wonder?

Okay, this rather belongs to the CC Random Speculation Thread, but I still haven't given up hope for the full version of "Face to Face" and an Eclipse set of his more significant TV works. Long overdue both.

Sadly, I believe Criterion has indicated via Facebook that they don't yet have any Bergman on the upcomming schedule. I am anxious for The Magician myself.

Is it possible that Criterion would be interested in doing a new restoration on Lang's Spiders ever. Also who owns the rights to the Coffin Joe movies?

Some speculation from Dave Kehr (in the comments to this week's blog post):
Dave Kehr wrote:I was asking my contact at Universal about “Island of Lost Souls” a couple of weeks ago and he says that another company has licensed it (Criterion, one assumes) and it should be surfacing one of these days.

but for the "one assumes" clause, this would be the best news I've heard in a while. This is one of my top twenty movies of all time.Dave Kehr wrote:another company has licensed it (Criterion, one assumes) and it should be surfacing one of these days.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
The only other arthouse label Universal has licensed to in R1--besides CC-- is Kino, with the Wylers, the Mamoulian Paramounts and the UNiversal silent for the Paul Leni/Conrad Veidt Man WHo Laughs.
So here's praying that the Kenton Island of Lost Souls is coming out on CC-- to see this beyond the 16mm VHS that's been the staple for 15 yrs with the VHS from Uni, to see it in a full 35mm, struck from quality fine grain preservation materials and polished after a nifty HD transfer... in a lavish edition with extras finally giving this eerie super-masterpiece its due at last... ah, 'twould be gloriousness unparalleled. It could turn out becoming one of my top 2 or 3 CC's of all time.
Barring that, if Kino stepped up with an edition on par with their last round of Universal releases-- Applause, Love Me Tonight, Man Who Laughs-- it'd be almost equal in status as far as I'm concerned... because these aforementioned releases saw Kino pulling top notch transfers with each film stuffed to the brim with extras. Some of their best releases, ever, really.
Great GREAT NEWS. Lost Souls is right up there with the James Whale films, the Mamoulian/Paramount 1932 Jekyll/Hyde, and Karl Freund's 2 horror films as the very best masterpieces of 1930's horror. Erle Kenton is quite underrated.

I LOVE El Sur, the film's a total masterpiece... just saw it for the first time in a decently subbed edition, at the end of the summer-- literally no more than a month ago.
Never saw Quince.

That figures. I've been bugging them about Quince for years and I finally just gave in and bought the super expensive import from eBay. Great news, regardless.

Absolutely. Not a big fan of After the Rehearsal, but I'd love to see a set with:Tommaso wrote:an Eclipse set of his more significant TV works.
In the Presence of a Clown
Markisinnan de Sade
From the Life of Marionettes
Bildmakarna
Or even better, some of the ones I haven't seen.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Um, not to be Debbie Downer but I'm pretty sure Criterion was saying 'yes' generally to the inclusion of more Spanish films in the Collection. I didn't get any indication that they were saying yes specifically to the films shouted out in the comments.
Jerry Johnson: EL SUR and QUINCE TREE SUN !
Stefan Andersson: Yes! EL SUR and QUINCE TREE SUN belong in the collection! Are there any plans for more Spanish films in the collection? Naturally, Victor Erice's remaining two films deserve to be released, and there's also Bardem and Sauros...all of whom deserve further treatment...but what I'd really like to see is some of the films by Luis García Berlanga. Particularly Bienvenido Mr. Marshall, Placido, and El Verdugo. Berlanga or no, I hope Criterion puts out some more Spanish classics"
Jerry Johnson: EL SUR and QUINCE TREE SUN !
But maybe I'm wrong!Criterion Collection wrote:Yes, but nothing announced yet.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Please let this be true - a Kino or CC release of this would make me unbelievably happy. If Criterion really release this and MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW in 2010, I'd be happy to declare it their best year ever on the strength of these two films alone, IF it happens for real. You are only allowed to declare it their worst year ever on the strength of two films alone. For it to be their best year ever, Criterion would have to put out like 80 objectively great films.Mr Finch wrote:I'd be happy to declare it their best year ever on the strength of these two films alone

Would it be too early to speculate if the CC is releasing Mann's Public Enemies? Movies released around that time theatrically are already on DVD, and there hasn't been any announcement of a R1 disc of the film.

just give me face to face, summer with monika and from the life of the marionettes, i think that criterion should give us more bergman, the last new bergman title was "Sawdust and Tinsel", we need some new material.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
Criterion has Island of Lost Souls, IMO. I think today was the third time they've been asked in the last 2/3 weeks and they avoid the question each time (i asked once too) , which seems odd since they seem to answer most people's queries. I'm sure after 1-2 more requests, they'll cave and respond.
