MoC's disc is Region 0 and NTSC.... but did you forget about this box set?Minkin wrote:What with MoC's new edition recently out...
Is anybody working on Sunrise for a US release? I found the earlier Fox release... well, bad- but it has gone out of print!
If it is in the works- and not done by Fox- I hope Kino isn't the one to pick it up.

Sunrise is always in the hand of Fox. The latest DVD version is the one included in Murnau-Borzage Boxset, so no surprise other earlier DVD went out of print.Minkin wrote:What with MoC's new edition recently out...

Yeah, yeah, yeah. In these situations, I often worry that someone will release it just around the corner- kinda like The Seventh Seal remake and when I foolishly bought the Ipod color when it came out- only to have it fall miserably into waste to the video Ipod.justeleblanc wrote:MoC's disc is Region 0 and NTSC.... but did you forget about this box set?Minkin wrote:What with MoC's new edition recently out...

I did forget about the boxset- but isn't it the older transfer? I guess I will just have to suck up and buy the MoC... it is too impressive of a release to miss.

For the record, Sunrise never went out of print in the U.S. It was originally released in the Fox Studio Classics - Best Picture Collection, which is still in print, and then released in the Murnau/Borzage set, along with the Czech version. It never had an individual release.

Nitpicking here, but that's not true. It was released individually as part of the "Studio Classics" series, although strangely it was only available as a by-mail freebie when you bought some other number of titles from the series. I think that particular release is OOP now.Feego wrote:For the record, Sunrise [...] never had an individual release.

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
True, but it was still never available to buy on its own. You either had to buy it in a collection or purchase other titles to receive it. That offer is not available anymore, but it was the same edition that is in the Studio Classics box set.fiddlesticks wrote:Nitpicking here, but that's not true. Man, that reminds me my 'Sunrise' box set had 'Gentleman's Agreement', maybe the worst movie I've ever seen

Luckily, with the Bette Davis, John Ford, and Murnau/Borzage boxed sets, the Studio Classics Best Picture set has been rendered superfluous, stopping many an unaware victim from owning Gentleman's Agreement

I was sort of proud to sell off my copy of GA for $2 on half.com, with the description: "Own the film that solved racism forever!"

It offends me that anyone would want another company to release another Blu Ray as superb as the R0 MoC Sunrise. I understand shipping in GBP is not ideal, but its a stellar release... Why wouldn't you want Criterion to concentrate on the thousands of titles no-one has released onto one of the best Blu Rays ever produced?justeleblanc wrote:MoC's disc is Region 0 and NTSC.... but did you forget about this box set?Minkin wrote:What with MoC's new edition recently out...

Criterion signs deal with VUDU to offer video on demand. You can either purchase films or choose them as rentals through your hidef tv.
Not my thing but maybe this is exciting news to some folks on the forum.

Criterion was plugging Jonathan Lethem's book Chronic City on Facebook. Makes sense considering this excerpt from the book in which the main character goes to the Criterion office to work on the supplements for some fictional film:

Re: 'Forthcoming' Lists Discussion and Random Speculation Vol.2
This character and the scene was featured in THE BOOK OF OTHER PEOPLE or something like that. I actually really hated the story. It tried too hard to be humorous with the inclusion of Criterion, but their presence added very little, and Tooth (the main character) was pretty prosaic. You'll all read it and share your opinions perhaps, and I'm guessing most of you will agree with me.ianungstad wrote:Criterion was plugging Jonathan Lethem's book Chronic City on Facebook. Then why should MoC bother with titles like For all Mankind or Grey Gardens, etc?Ben Cheshire wrote:It offends me that anyone would want another company to release another Blu Ray as superb as the R0 MoC Sunrise. They might as well tell you, "don't buy our product or anything we might likely produce- just buy a region free DVD player and deal with foreign conversion and shipping fees."
I have a great love and respect for MoC. They release the titles that Kino has butchered. I just don't want to go to the trouble if something might be just around the corner.
If I'm in the UK or if nothing else similar is coming out (like the Keaton set, etc), I'll pick up some MoC's otherwise, I'll see what is released here.
Other than missing that boxset, I don't think I was too ridiculous- usually a new transfer and release in one zone follows in another.

So I will start the guessing, but I assume that they will announce titles on Thursday, maybe Friday next week.

I noticed that some of the Castle Hill titles went OOP, including Kazan's Baby Doll and the Marx Brother's Night in Casablanca. (Criterion's been snooping around Castle Hill lately, picking up the Caidin Trust titles)
Martin Scorsese's first film Who's That Knocking On My Door went OOP as well. Isn't this owned by some exploitation producer? I think it would be a nice package if Criterion could license it from Joseph Brenner and include the film along with the shorts into one nice set.
If Warners keeps imploding like this, Criterion or some other company needs to set up a licensing agreement so all these films don't end up in limbo!

Does anyone here have VUDU? Seems you can only get it with certain LG or Mitsubishi TVs (and maybe Blu-ray players?) or on their rather expensive proprietary boxes.ianungstad wrote:Criterion signs deal with VUDU to offer video on demand.
Anyway, check out the fourth paragraph of VUDU's blog post on the deal for a real howler.

Spoiler
Which one(s) do you mean? The typos, the confusing of director and cinematographer, or the sheer chuzpe to name Ivory in the same breath as Fellini and Bergman?

For whatever it's worth, this is just a snippet from the novel (yes, it may have appeared previously in something else)...so I'll wait before I judge it...assuming they ever release the damn thing.justeleblanc wrote: This character and the scene was featured in THE BOOK OF OTHER PEOPLE or something like that. That recent email response posted earlier in this thread indicates to me that Che and Stagecoach are further off than January (and Stagecoach has pretty much been stated as getting a BD, too).psufootball07 wrote:So I will start the guessing, but I assume that they will announce titles on Thursday, maybe Friday next week.
